Job description

This Plant Supervisor position purpose is to assist employees be successful as they produce and ship the desired product, in the right volume, with excellent quality, with excellent adherence to the production and shipping schedules in an efficient and cost effective fashion. In addition they will facilitate the continuous improvement of plant performance.

In order to meet the stated purpose of the supervisor, key components of the supervisor’s work include the following:

  • Coordinates and assists in creating clarity about daily production and shipping schedules and other manufacturing objectives.
  • Enables the successful completion of job requirements and plant adherence to schedule and throughput / quality standards through communication of objectives, provision of training, insuring tools and materials needed are present, and administering “consequence” in the appropriate fashion.
  • Reviews daily process performance during the day, identifies gaps from daily goals, and initiates corrective action and communication with other impacted parties in a timely and effective fashion.
  • Engages and facilitates employees in business / process improvement activities on focused targeted objectives.
  • Coordinates production activities with procurement, maintenance, and quality control activities to obtain optimum production of machines and equipment.
  • Reinforce sense of urgency during production runs and periods of machine downtime.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLLITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensure that the workplace is safe for employees to work within and that all employees are working safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure all Personal Protection Equipment policies, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), safety and all plant documentation, and regulatory policies and procedures are complied with throughout the plant
  • Assist and verify that a production line is setup appropriately for the product to be run.
  • Ensure all products produced are within accepted food safety and quality specifications.
  • Assist operators in running at throughput and quality standards with optimal efficiency.
  • Audit CIP’s (Clean In Place) and perform random inspections of equipment after CIP.
  • As needed, provide direction, clarity of expectation, and training to employees to enable their job success and achievement of process performance, GMP, and housekeeping standards.
  • Monitor process performance, identify root causes of substandard performance, and address root causes appropriately, including personnel issues.
  • Monitor and approve time/attendance for production staff.
  • Arrange coverage when approving vacations or days off.

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  • Basic supervisory training or equivalent supervisory experience
  • Experience in manufacturing environments that use continuous improvement tools in the areas of lean manufacturing and statistics.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience
  • Five to ten years related experience and/or training as a supervisory or leader
  • Combination of education, experience or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skill and ability required is acceptable.

  • Is able to make independent rational decisions - works under minimal supervision.
  • Able to work 12 hour, rotating shift schedule

Materials and Equipment Directly Used:

  • Factory environment and dairy equipment
  • Office machinery including: Computers, printer, fax machine, copier, telephones, etc.
  • Software including: Microsoft Office (excel, word) Outlook.

Language, Presentation, and Math skills:

  • Effective communication, both written and verbal
  • Able to deliver short presentations to small groups
  • Able to do basic algebra
  • Opening to learning new management skills as needed.

Reasoning and Learning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Knows how to learn and enjoys learning new things.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds regularly; up to 50 pounds frequently; up to 70 occasionally.

Work environment:

  • Work area is frequently loud with exposure to inside and outside environments including extreme cold, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
