DESCRIPTION:

Dane County Land and Water is recruiting for an Limited Term Employment (LTE) Forestry Technician. Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION
Under direct supervision of Dane County Parks Forester Specialist, operate motorized equipment to care for trees and landscape vegetation; perform specialized work in tree planting, pruning, trimming and removal including aerial rigging operations; apply pesticides as required (under state and federal rules and regulations).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Plant, water, prune and remove trees. Landscape and restore disturbed sites by leveling, preparing soil, seedling and mulching. Control and remove invasive species using chemical and mechanical means. Operate specialized equipment in the maintenance of trees including tree spade, stump grinder, brush chipper, skid-steer and the hydraulic drive attachments and aerial lifts. Operate small equipment including chain saws, power tools, hand tools, brush cutter, spray units, weed trimmers, various mowers, fertilizer and seed spreaders. Load, tie-down and transport materials in a safe manner. Ensure equipment is serviced with fuel, oil, coolant lubricants. Assist with educational activities regarding urban tree management in the Dane County Parks system. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Training and Experience:
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate forestry or natural resource program.

Certifications/Licenses:
Must have completed a chainsaw safety course that meets OSHA standards. Must have a Certified Pesticide Applicators License in category 3.0 Turf & Landscaping.

Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Final candidate(s) will be subject to passing a thorough driving record background check.

Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
This position is frequently active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and up to 75 pounds with assistance. Ability to do manual labor, including repetitive lifting, bending, reaching, kneeling and squatting. Work will be primarily outdoors in varying terrains in harsh temperature conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Ability to communicate tactfully with the public and project a positive image. Ability to work well with others in a team and must be able to work independently with limited supervision. Knowledge in the areas of upper Midwest trees and landscape vegetation. Knowledge of the safe and effective use of herbicides. Ability to read maps and navigate to work locations. Basic knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance including ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, weed whackers, mowers, light and heavy duty vehicles and trailers, commercial mowers and various hand and power tools.
