The City of Westbrook is hiring for the position of Library Assistant.

As a member of the Walker Memorial Library staff, the person in this position provides excellent customer service while adhering to established policies and procedures by the library, city, and statewide lending consortium. This position is responsible for the performance of tasks at the assigned services desks. This is a non-exempt, 25 hour per week position.

Job Duties:

· Staffs customer service desks.

· Performs library opening and closing procedures.

· Checks in and out all circulating materials utilizing library management software, with accuracy and efficiency, while maintaining customer privacy.

· Assists customers with reader’s advisory services and materials requests.

· Receives phone calls and assists or transfers calls as necessary.

· Assists customers with self-service library catalog, public computers, printer, photocopier, fax, and scanner use.

· Creates, implements, and presents library programming, with emphasis on meeting the needs of the targeted age group, both onsite and in the community.

· Assists with maintaining attendance statistics.

· Processes incoming and outgoing materials for Interlibrary Loan Statewide Delivery System.

· Assists with preparation of circulation notices and paging slips.

· Collects fees and performs other related monetary functions.

· Assists with the maintenance of the patron database.

· Shelves, shelf-reads and organizes collections.

· Processes new library materials for circulation; repairs damaged materials.

· Assists with managing room reservations.

· Contributes content to website, social media, and newsletter, as requested.

· Assists with the creation and maintenance of displays.

· Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications:

· Graduate from college, or equivalent experience that provides the necessary knowledge to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. One to three years of library experience is desirable. Additional training/education in related areas can be useful, i.e., knowledge of Sierra software and experience with the MINERVA Consortium is a plus.

· Knowledge of books, viewing and listening materials in order to assist with providing reader’s advisory. Experience with reader’s advisory databases such as Novelist Plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

· Competitive salary range of $17.74 – 25.29/hour.

· Generous paid leave including vacation, sick and 13 holiday per year.

· Tuition reimbursement at 75% for job-related courses.

· Retirement program of the Maine Public Employees Retirement Plan (Maine PERS) or defined 457 with matching up to 6%.
