Position Summary


We are currently seeking a Lab Planner to be an integral part of our lab planning team in our New York office. The position has responsibility for collaborating on a broad range of laboratory projects in science, and engineering for universities, and private industry. Our team provides programming, lab design, architectural and engineering coordination, equipment planning and construction administration. This position requires a high level of communication with clients and user groups to develop laboratory requirements and to guide projects to insure positive outcomes for all stakeholders.


Reporting Structure


Position reports to the Director of Science and Technology / Studio Managing Director.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Possess strong organizational and independent working skills.
  • Lead discussions with stakeholders and end users to generate solutions in real-time.
  • Have experience in program development and detailed design of laboratories, scientific and engineering facilities.
  • Actively direct and review the work of the lab planning team.
  • Lead the documentation of laboratory systems, casework, lab equipment and development of laboratory spaces to facilitate scientific discovery.
  • Coordinate or prepare drawings and designs in accordance with HLW’s standards, best practice and quality expectations.
  • Understand research methodology and integrates research into practice.
  • Lead team meetings to discuss project issues, technical issues and coordination with other disciplines.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of client meetings.
  • Develop solutions and details independently and under the direction of the Senior Project Architect/Designer.
  • Anticipate problems and bring them to the attention of the Senior Project Architect/Designer.
  • Possess thorough knowledge and understanding of building codes, direct team members in the application of codes and standards.
  • Generate project elements proficiently Revit following office standards.
  • Organize and present information to project team, consultant group and client.
  • Coordinate laboratory specifications with construction documents.
  • Review the laboratory shop drawings for compliance with documentation and recommend action. Identify questions and issues for review with the Senior Project Architect/Designer.
  • Assist construction administration for the laboratories through project closeout.
  • Participate in Marketing and Business Development for the firm.

Role Qualifications:

  • Professional degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience in a similar role.
  • Proficient knowledge of Revit software.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office Suite and/or other design software.
  • Newforma experience a plus.
  • Show interest in understanding of design, detailing, materials and construction methods.
  • Ability to take initiative in developing project scope and finding solutions for project issues.
  • Ability to work on different projects in different phases.
  • Adaptable to changing project schedules and deliverables.

The expected salary range for this position is $110,000-$150,000. Ultimately, in determining pay, we will consider relevant experience, qualifications, location and other job-related factors.
