This is a senior-level skilled craft position responsible for performing work in preventative maintenance, operation, and repair of most mechanical equipment on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. Responsible for maintaining and repairing pumps and related piping systems, small package units, reciprocating A/C compressors from 1 to 100 hp; maintaining and repairing cooling towers of all types and sizes; maintaining and repairing boilers from 25 to 500 hp; and maintaining and repairing controls for boilers, A/C units, and air handling units. Provides supervision to helpers assigned as assistants. Reports to the HVAC Foreperson.
Essential Job Functions
  • Repairs, maintains, and operates various types of HVAC equipment. These include filters, pumps, fan and coil units; electronic and pneumatic systems and centrifugal chillers; heaters, boilers, and boiler controls; and other related equipment.
  • Inspects and maintains various types of gauges, instrumentation, and indicators.
  • Ensures proper operation of HVAC equipment.
  • Performs mechanical adjustments and completes preventative maintenance.
  • Assists in maintaining records and logs detailing equipment performance, malfunctions, and maintenance.
  • Provides supervision to helpers assigned as assistants.
  • Navigates and operates plant systems through the energy management system.
Non-Essential Job Functions
  • May navigate and/or operate plant systems through the energy management system.
  • May perform minor housekeeping, locksmith, plumbing, and electrical work as needed.
  • May solder, weld, or braze.
  • Serves routine on-call status.
  • Serves as backup to other departmental staff when assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies, procedures, and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, tools, and equipment for HVAC maintenance, operation, and repair.
  • Understanding the theory and principles of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • General knowledge of plumbing and electrical as it relates to HVAC.
  • Knowledge of various types of HVAC systems and how the systems relate to each other.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Ability to read detailed blueprints and make simple drawings.
  • Ability to learn and understand the energy management system.
  • Ability to work from complex written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to weld, solder, and braze.
  • Ability to regularly serve on-call duty and work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license and SFA driver’s permit.
  • Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Physical Demands Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Required Experience and Training
Six years of related experience is required. Experience in the repair, maintenance, and operation of all phases of HVAC equipment is required. EPA universal refrigerant certification is required prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications
Energy management systems and supervisory experience is preferred.

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
