Job description
The Hospice Chaplain is responsible for the provision of spiritual care services to patients and families/caregivers, either directly or through coordination of care with other spiritual clergy/counselor. The Hospice Chaplain is a pastoral care professional who will minister to persons of varied religious beliefs, ages and cultures. assisting patients, families, staff in drawing upon their spiritual resources as an important element of holistic care.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Masters degree in Divinity, Theology or related field from a seminary or graduate school (resident programs only) accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. Equivalency may be considered in rare situations.
2. At least two years active ministry (full-time preferred) and four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Certification and Accreditation, or the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE). Equivalency for one unit of CPE may be considered.
3. Board certification or eligibility to be certified within two years of employment by one (or more) of the following professional organizations:
- American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC)
- Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
- Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)
- Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE)
- National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
- National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
4. Education, training, and/or experience in patient counseling with skill in dealing with ethical, religious, and spiritual dimensions of illness, loss, bereavement, and other areas relevant to ministry in the clinical setting.
5. Ability to accept different lifestyles, cultures, belief and values.
6. Superior skills in interpersonal communication, including training in crisis intervention.
7. Ability to network with community clergy and congregations.
8. Knowledge of and commitment to hospice philosophy of care.
9. Previous health care experience preferred.
