The Health Information Coder III is a senior level inpatient coder. Patient records are coded and abstracted according to UCSF Health policies and procedures. The focus is on range of hospital charts, with minimal review of coding for quality. The coding and abstracting must comply with the official guidelines for coding and reporting, practice standards and code of ethics for HIMS coder.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation.
  • CCS , RHIT or RHIA certification
  • 3+ years’ experience inpatient coding and abstracting in an acute health care facility; teaching hospital experience strongly preferred.
  • Must pass initial score of 90% on coding competence assessment test or must have 6 months recent inpatient coding experience with UCSF with 95% accuracy rate
  • Must meet daily production requirement with minimal accuracy rate of 95%.
  • Basic EHR and encoder skills
  • Basic computer skills, including Windows, Word and Excel.
  • Proven excellent communication and cooperative skills.
  • Ability to analyze information, make decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to follow written directions.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and perform well under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical abbreviations, disease processes, anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT classification systems.
  • Knowledge of HIMS database systems.
  • Knowledge of HIMS procedures.

License/Certification

  • CCS or RHIT or RHIA certification
