ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Expected Hiring Range: $27.12- $33.22
Work Location: Town of Apex Townhall; 73 Hunter Street
Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING (DESCRIPTION):

Performs responsible skilled technical work in the daily operation of the Town’s Geographic Information System, focused on public utility data and applications.


An employee in this class is responsible for the daily creation, update, and management of utility related GIS features, assets, data, and special maps. This includes design, collection and verification of data, advising end users, and working with the Town’s GIS Administrator to integrate geographic data into the Town’s GIS. Work will require use of GPS technology and field work to collect and verify data. Work is usually performed alone and requires independent initiative and the ability to meet deadlines. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated based on conferences, review of completed work, and observation of demonstrated skills.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS (DUTIES & TASKS):

  • Collects, imports, queries, reviews, and exports GIS information.
  • Transfers geographic data from prepared maps, as-built data, or GPS collection device into GIS database. Reviews as built drawings to ensure that utilities are accurately depicted.
  • Provides quality control of data in the GIS system.
  • Manages online GIS map services.
  • Reviews requests for special maps and data layers, estimates time of completion and produces maps and applications as needed.
  • Conducts field checks and collection as needed and operates GPS equipment to verify validity of data.
  • Educates co-workers and other staff about GIS and its efficient uses.
  • Maintains GIS and GPS software & equipment.
  • Coordinates with the Town’s GIS Administrator to achieve short- and long-term goals .

WHAT YOU'LL NEED (MINIMUM MUST-HAVES):

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree in geography, computer science, planning, or equivalent to include at least 1 year of experience working with ESRI desktop GIS software, and proficiency in the ArcGIS suite of online applications, such as ArcGIS Online, Collector, Field Maps and Survey123. Familiarity with ESRI Enterprise GIS, ESRI Utility Network, Python, Javascript and mapping API’s a plus.

WITH THE ABILITY TO...(KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):

  • Working knowledge of ESRI GIS software.
  • Working knowledge of the operation, use, and capabilities of computer hardware and software and related peripheral equipment.
  • Working knowledge of map preparation, computer aided design techniques and illustration work.
  • Working knowledge of GPS equipment.
  • Working knowledge of utility infrastructure and systems such as electric, water and stormwater.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and state & federal regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with the general public and other employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to perform the basic life operational support functions of walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze figures, operate a computer terminal, perform mechanical tasks in the computer environment, do extensive reading, and do visual inspections of computer parts and automated data.

Special Requirement:

  • Possession of valid NC driver's license
