FULL-TIME YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INSTRUCTOR (YDI)

Summary:

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County (BGCSJC) seeks a high-energy and passionate full-time Youth Development Instructors (YDI) to support the multi-faceted youth learning experience through positive, engaging interactions with members and their families in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. YDIs will plan, implement, evaluate activities, and supervise members, within a specific age group (K-2nd grade or 3rd-5th grade) at Success Academy at The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County in South Bend, IN via a co-teaching model. YDIs will collaborate with fellow school & BGCSJC staff, community volunteers, interns, donors, and member families to help produce and sustain an educationally motivating, safe and secure environment for all stakeholders.

BGCSJC serves 3,000 children ages five to 18 annually at over 25 sites across the county through summer and before and after-care programming. YDIs will support the overall efforts of serving BGCSJC’s mission, vision, and services.

Essential Functions:

Works with school and BGCSJC staff, including the Club Director, to plan, organize, and implement school & Club curriculum, programs, and activity schedules, including small group, large group, individual, and community-based learning activities. Sustain dedicated presence on site during all hours of operation. Consistency and reliability are keys to success in this direct-service role.

• Work side-by-side with classroom teachers to plan and execute daily lesson plans, including off-site community based learning activities
• Support the Club Director in the planning and implementation of holistic programming for members in a fast-paced, energetic environment
• Facilitate program development that addresses the needs, interests, and characteristics of all members
• Manage program development that utilizes effective youth development strategies
• Implement the school’s and Club’s safety, guidance, and discipline policies consistently and compassionately
• Establish and sustain positive, professionally respectful relations with all parents and family members
• Participate in and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and planning sessions as required
• Participate in the maintenance of a clean, safe, positive environment conducive to youth development
• Participate in required reporting, documenting, and other administrative functions relative to youth development and program management
• Interface in a professional and positive manner with student’s families/parents, college students and community volunteers, fellow/float staff, and school officials
• Role model appropriate behavior with respect to attire, boundaries, communication, and social conduct/networking
• Respond in an appropriate and timely fashion to all written and electronic requests for information
• Occasionally run the classroom without the teacher present
• Attend relevant conferences and training workshops

Qualifications:

• High school diploma, some post-secondary education preferred
• Prior experience working with elementary-aged children
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe products
• CPR, first aid, suicide prevention, and trauma-informed training are required
• Should enjoy working with elementary-aged children and have aspirations to become a teacher someday
• Growth mindset is a must
• Must be able to work independently and collaboratively with others
• Must be physically and mentally able to perform essential functions, possess sufficient physical strength and energies required to effectively engage in activities with children, and support and sustain the physical environment
• Ability to move, walk, run, bend, reach, stoop in the delivery of member care
• Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, pull up to 20 lb.
• Ability to frequently handle gross and fine manipulations such as grasping, twisting of small objects
• Ability to handle hazardous/infectious waste; work where chemicals are used for cleaning; work where mechanical and electrical hazards, and where environmental dust, mist, steam are occasionally present
• Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe manner
• Ability to accurately read and complete documentation; assist children in written/other activities
• Ability to work in a rapid paced environment where noise and stress levels may be high
• Ability to interface professionally with a diverse group of people

Skills and Abilities:

Strong passion for working with children. Must be self-motivated, competitive, creative, personable, and detail-oriented with excellent communication skills. Strong emphasis on solution-based thinking, positivity, and ability to execute. Team player who is ethical, transparent in communication, and treats colleagues, students, and their families with the highest level of respect. Must be able to pass any and all required background screens and drug screens at any time.

Salary Range:

$18-$20 per hour
