Freight Rate Specialist

Location: Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA

Pay Rate: $20.63

The responsibilities of Freight Rate Specialists are research data and identify and assign Department of Transportation (DOT) hazard classifications, placard requirements, and freight rate classification to an unlimited variety of commodities shipped. Freight Rate Specialists evaluates shipment requirements to plan the most efficient and economical method of transportation. A variety of shipments require movement by more than one mode (i.e., movement to a port by motor and subsequent movement by water or military air to final destination). Freight Rate Specialists use a variety of regulations in the shipment planning process including the National Motor Freight Classification Guide (EMP 100-J), Code of Federal Regulations 49 (CFR 49) for movement of hazardous material by motor, and International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for movement of dangerous goods by sea. Freight Rate Specialists research carrier tenders and tariffs, computes and compares freight rates, accessorial charges and fuel surcharges. Individuals should possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
