We are seeking a FINANCIAL CARE COUNSELOR for our Duke Otolaryngology of Raleigh clinic to accurately complete patient accounts based on departmental protocol, policies and procedures, and compliance with regulatory agencies, to include but not limited to pre-admission, admission, pre-registration and registration functions. Ensure all insurance requirements are met prior to patients' arrival and inform patients of their financial liability prior to arrival for services. Arrange payment options with the patients and screens patients for government funding sources/or local charity care.

This position is a split role between two clinics: Duke Otolaryngology of Raleigh and Duke Otolaryngology of South Durham.

JOB DUTIES

  • Obtain prior authorizations/precertification for clinic and procedures as required by insurance carriers as needed according to PRMO guidelines.
  • Obtain insurance certifications, and inform patients of their financial liability.
  • Assists with department coverage as needed.
  • Handles cash management.
  • Resolve work queue edits, and resolve insurance claims denials and rejections
  • Prescreen self-pay patients the day before to ensure and receive accurate patient demographics and insurance requirements are met and inform them of their financial liability prior to patient's arrival
  • Facilitate payment sources for uninsured patients.
  • Set up payment arrangements for patients with outstanding self-pay balances.
  • Inform attending physician of patient financial hardship.
  • Gathers necessary documentation to support proper handling of inquiries and complaints.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work requires knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally required through a high school education, with some postsecondary education and additional training preferred.
  • Two years of experience working in a healthcare setting or billing and collections; or an Associate's degree in a healthcare related field and one year of experience working with the public; or a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with the public.
  • Understanding of billing, insurance plan requirements and pre-authorization procedures.
  • EPIC experience in billing, insurance, scheduling and pre-authorization preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
  • Ability to analyze data, perform multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain professional, service-oriented working relationships with patients, physicians, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must be able to understand and comply with policies and procedures.
