Job description
Welcome to Zufall Health!

WittKieffer is proud to partner with Zufall Health, a nationally recognized Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves over 41,000 patients each year across northwestern and central New Jersey. With the upcoming retirement of Eva Turbiner, who has served as CEO for over 16 years, Zufall's Board of Directors has launched a national search to find a mission-driven leader. Eva Turbiner was successful transforming Zufall from a tiny clinic into one of the most successful community health centers in the Northeast. The new CEO will need an equally strong passion for the work, with a keen understanding of the rapidly changing health care financing and delivery system and the breadth of experience to lead an FQHC that has become a model that other community health centers will continue to emulate.

Each year, Zufall conducts more than 175,000 medical, dental, and behavioral health visits for low-income community residents. Zufall is the only FQHC in New Jersey receiving federal funding to provide specially targeted services to all three HRSA-designated Special Populations: Homeless individuals; Residents of public housing; and Migratory and seasonal agricultural workers. The organization has grown to a budget approaching $50 million and a workforce exceeding 400. Zufall was one of the first medical practices in New Jersey to earn designation as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Zufall’s patients are among the most vulnerable in the state. Currently, 52 percent are uninsured, with most of the remaining on Medicaid, NJ Family Care, or Medicare. Nearly 90 percent have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Seventy-four percent of patients identify as Hispanic, and 66 percent are best served in a language other than English.

The new CEO will work closely with the Board to set the strategic vision, ensure sound financial operations, oversee program development and empower staff by inspiring a supportive, inclusive, and engaging culture. This executive will be a visionary, identifying possibilities for leveraging Zufall's expertise and assets in a way that will drive the continued strong performance of the organization, with high quality care for all as a crucial priority. Strong communication and relationship skills are essential to ensuring transparency and collaboration. Understanding the culture, mission of the organization, and predisposition/values of the staff to serve vulnerable populations will be critical.

The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader, someone who can quickly earn the respect of the community, staff and board. Experience should include ten years of progressive leadership in a complex, multi-functional, mission-oriented organization with a diverse portfolio. Experience in a multi-site FQHC, community health center, primary care facility, not-for-profit healthcare, or human services organization will be considered. This executive must have served as the ultimate guardian of their organization's fiscal health, with solid experience preparing operating plans, forecasting, managing balance sheets, budgeting, establishing financial controls, and mitigating risks. Communicating performance in a proactive and transparent manner with leadership and the Board will also be a key responsibility/measurable. The CEO must be service-minded, understand the 24/7 nature of the role, with a passion for impacting underserved and highly diverse communities.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a highly successful organization, noted for its mission-driven and life-changing impact, to even new heights. The new CEO will continue the important work of Zufall to provide primary care to those in need within its service area, while ensuring a continued focus on equity, racial, and social justice.
