What You Will Do

The EPC-CP Group, Water Quality Team provides institutional technical leadership and direction to line organizations for compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and executive orders, including legal agreements, orders, and directives.

Environmental Sampling Technician 3 ($56,300.00-$87,200.00)

Under direction from the Water Quality Team Leader and Group Management, you will provide sampling and technical support to the Water Quality Team related to New Mexico Environment Department's (NMED) Groundwater Discharge Permits, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit Programs for outfalls discharges and other water quality regulations. This work will include internal facility water quality sampling tasks such as operational and wastewater sampling. This position, while serving as a point of contact for water quality self-monitoring programs and working with staff and management throughout the Laboratory, is responsible for calibration of instruments, field operation of automated samplers (including sampler installation, maintenance, and retrieval), processing of water quality samples, and maintenance of sampling equipment, containers, chemicals and reagents in a safe and orderly condition. You will also provide defensible compliance documentation and records such as NPDES sampling records, log books, sample collection Chain of Custodies and calibration checks. A significant portion of sampling support activities will be conducted outdoors under varying weather conditions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining records according to established protocols and regulatory requirements and experience in surface water, groundwater, storm water quality, wastewater, and/or academic research programs.
  • Broad experience in conducting environmental sampling in compliance with established standard operating procedures, quality assurance procedures, and other associated protocols.
  • Demonstrated skills in the installation, operation, and maintenance of environmental monitoring instruments and equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, and demonstrated ability to respond to program requirements and changing priorities in a timely manner.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and two to four years of experience in environmental field work, including sampling gained through training in specific field operations. A technical institute graduate or associate's degree may be preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • (If possible but not required) Working knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities.
  • Experience preparing correspondence and reports and Integrated Work Documents or other safety documents.
  • Experience with environmental management systems. In particular, experience inputting information and generating reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner with managers, peers, customers, and other personnel.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
