Overview:

We are seeking a environmental sampling technician who will support multiple environmental monitoring and surveillance programs that are performed to ensure compliance with state, federal, and DOE requirements. This position resides in the Environmental Sampling and Data Evaluation Group in the Environmental Protection Services Division, Environmental Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team to execute sampling and data collection activities of various environmental media (air and water discharges, ambient air and surface water, groundwater, wildlife, soils, vegetation, etc.) at environmental monitoring field locations in and around the Oak Ridge Reservation, conducting work according to all applicable standard operating procedures, sampling and analysis plans, safety work plans, radiological work permits, and other internal requirements.
  • Strict adherence to safe work practices is required. Perform work according to established work packages and participate in pre- and post-job safety briefings for each work event.
  • Ensure compliance with permit and procedural requirements for recordkeeping, document control, sample chain of custody, data entry, and sample handling and management.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot environmental monitoring equipment, including automated and manually operated instrumentation.
  • Perform field and laboratory testing using colorimetric and wet chemistry techniques.
  • Coordinate sampling events and monitoring station maintenance activities by scheduling and involving appropriate personnel, including facility managers, safety support services, radiological control technicians, and various craft and trade personnel.
  • Climbing ladders and working at heights is required. Perform sampling of stack emissions and operate stack monitoring equipment on platforms located on air emissions stacks which are located at heights up to 65 feet above the ground surface.
  • Complete and maintain training in order to utilize fall protection safety equipment while completing technical tasks.


Basic Qualifications:

  • An assoicates degree in environmental, biological, or chemical sciences; environmental or civil engineering; or related field with minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (e.g., performing environmental sampling and data collection in a regulatory compliance or research setting, analyzing samples of environmental media in a field or laboratory setting, etc.).
  • Equilavent combination of education and 8 years of experience will be considered.
  • Must be comfortable climbing and/or working at elevated heights on a daily bases.
  • Must be able to work and perform stack sampling/collection at heights of 50-100 ft above grade routinely.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
  • Experience monitoring a variety of environmental media utilizing field instruments and test kits and/or the collection of samples to comply with EPA approved procedures
  • Experience with radiological air sampling and EPA stack sampling methods
  • Experience conducting wet chemistry laboratory analyses
  • Experience collecting water quality samples from groundwater monitoring wells
  • Experience or coursework in environmental data science and computing
  • Experience working at a Department of Energy or other federal government facility
  • Department of Transportation, Radiological Worker, and Hazardous Waste Operator Trainings
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • General proficiency with personal computers
  • Effective written and oral communication skills


Physical Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
