South Burlington School DistrictPosition DescriptionJob Title: English Language Learner Teacher (ELL)Location: District Assigned SchoolJob Group: EducatorPay Level: ExemptReports to: PrincipalSummary: To create a grade appropriate English Language Learner (ELL) program and to help learners,according to their ability, develop linguistic and cultural competencies from which a solid foundation forcontinued learning may be established. Maintains effective relationships with students, parents, staff, andcommunity members to enhance learning opportunities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.1. Develops lesson plans and instructional material and provides individualized and small groupinstruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.2. Constructs lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.3.

Assesses and monitors learning using a variety of methods and adjusts instruction accordingly to individualstudent needs.4. Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phonecalls, e-mails, conferences, etc.5. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.6. Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.7.

Identifies student needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual educationplans.8. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.9. Creates an environment that is developmentally appropriate for age/grade of students.10. Instruct students in good citizenship behaviors and basic subject matter using current best practices and asspecified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school and districtSupervisory Responsibilities: Oversees the work of classroom employees, students, and volunteers.Monitors student discipline through an appropriate classroom management program.

Regular attendance inaccordance with established work schedule.Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform eachessential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform theessential functions.Education and/or Experience: Bachelor degree.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Vermont Teaching License with appropriate endorsements inEnglish Language Learner, or English as a Second Language.Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret textbooks, periodicals, professional journals,technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write lesson plans, reports,correspondence, and procedures.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions fromstudents, parents, staff, and the public. Ability to use a variety of assessments for student work.Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statisticalinference, fundamentals of algebra, and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions,percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to use a variety of assessments forstudent work.Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables insituations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished inwritten, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructionalprogram; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school and district objectives and the needs andabilities of assigned students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peersand parents; skilled in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of alldistrict requirements, Vermont Education Quality Standards (EQS), applicable laws, and Board policies.Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptionalcustomer service.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employeeto successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. suchas boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision such as to read handwritten ortyped material, and the ability to adjust focus.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands fromseveral people and interact with the public and other staff.Emotional Demands: The individual must be able to work with others in a collegial and cooperativemanner, model best behavior, must show above average interpersonal skills and follow directions of schoolleadership.Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here represent those employeeencounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
