The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to a hire a technical specialist to serve as our next Electrical Specialist. As an Electrical Specialist, this position will inspect and approve all electrical work done within Northwest Region (NWR) Right of Way by State contractors, local agencies, developers, and utility contractors working under permits and agreements. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical Specialist will:
- Inspect and approve all electrical work done on WSDOT Right of Way by WSDOT contractors, local agencies, developers, and utility contractors working under permits and agreements, and by State forces related to highway safety and operations.
- Provide guidance on and interpretation of applicable RCWs, WACs, and the National Electrical Code on highway, building, ferry terminal, bridges and tunnel related electrical installations.
- Direct difficult electrical installations and complex troubleshooting of electrical systems.
- Provide local agencies, developers, and contractors with department’s interpretation of and guidance on the RCWs, WACs, the National Electrical Code, contract plans and specifications, WSDOT standard specifications and plans, WSDOT Design Manual, and national, state, and local electrical codes.
- Schedule all work and coordinate critical activities within the assigned area.
- Develop and conduct annual training classes and provide on the job training to the project electrical inspection personnel.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current Driver’s License
- Six (6) years of experience in the electrical/electronic field, with four (4) years of experience as an electrician with a Journeyman’s certification issued by the Department of Labor and Industries.
- Journey Level Electrician License (EL01)
- Ability to climb ladders and work out of a boom truck.
- Ability to manipulate up to 30lbs.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions while traversing uneven terrain next to high speed traffic.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Knowledge and experience working with contract plans and specifications, National Electrical Code, State and local electrical codes, WAC, RCW, and WSDOT policies, procedures and standards of electrical work.
Important Notes
- Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT. Exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes; however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position.
- This position is eligible for remote work up to 10%, per supervisor approval.
- The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
