Job Description
The Larson Institution, housed within the School of Public Health at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks candidates for current and future Disease Control Specialist 1 positions. These positions communicate COVID-19 and other conditions testing results to the public, provides consultation to community, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and completes data reporting to state databases.
***These positions does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. These are temporary full-time positions to provide support for COVID-19 and disease prevention and control in coordination with local and state health jurisdictions. Positions are located in Reno and/or Carson City, Nevada.
Disease Investigation
  • Communicate to community members infected with COVID-19 and other conditions results and link those with symptoms to testing and care
  • Provide information regarding treatment sources, necessary security requirements such as quarantine, and other procedures to reduce the spread or prevalence of the disease
  • Provide consultation regarding symptoms, CDC recommendations and isolation requirements
  • Conduct disease investigations, recommend containment or risk reduction measures
  • Identify virus source and interview people with SARS CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 (i.e., disease) and other conditions using motivational interviewing techniques. Identify who the infected individual has been in contact with in order to communicate potential exposure
  • Make collateral contacts to obtain pertinent information concerning other individuals who may have been exposed or infected
  • Communicate to contacts of their exposure, assessing their symptoms and risk and providing instructions for next steps. Provide contacts with information regarding disease prevention. If symptoms arise, advise to seek medical attention early
  • Determine if the case is part of a larger group with a higher risk of transmission.
  • Provide health education/risk reduction
Reporting
  • Responsible for accurate, timely recordkeeping and following data entry protocols
  • Gather and compile data in cooperation with various groups and agencies for use at national, State or local levels
  • Identify and report trends identified through disease investigation
  • Report outbreak clusters
Compliance
  • Ensure state and federal compliance laws and regulations are met
Required Qualifications
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, health science, biology, chemistry, physiology, medical technology, psychology, sociology or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which included two years of paraprofessional experience assisting in federal or county epidemiological investigations.
Schedule
The typical work schedule varies and is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation Grade
Grade 30, Entry step is 01 ($20.11/hr) - Step 05 ($23.78/hr)
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
