POSITION SUMMARY:


MHO’s Pharmacy Director is a critical leader in the organization and responsible for the overall strategic operation of the Pharmacy Department, while also contributing to the administration of the entire practice, including helping to oversee and support clinical operations, quality and safety, and future clinical research initiatives. Reporting to the COO and leading the oral and infusion pharmacy teams, the Pharmacy Department serves all of MHO’s sites and has daily impact on MHO’s patients.


The Pharmacy organization has both oral dispensing and admixture departments and requires a proactive and organized leader to lead it. A strategic thinker and thoughtful problem solver, MHO’s Pharmacy Director will provide expertise as it relates to oncology pharmaceuticals and regimens, payer/manufacturer audits, best pharmacy practices and PBM’s. The successful candidate will work closely with physicians and clinical staff in addition to external vendors and auditors as necessary.

SERVING THE PATIENT
:


The Director, Pharmacy ensures that the patients are provided the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible while under the care at MHO. Patients requiring oral medications should expect a convenient and well-designed process while also ensuring appropriate understanding of their therapies. Patients receiving infused medications should feel confident they are receiving medications that are compounded in a compliant manner with safeguards designed to ensure safety. Additional education will be provided to patients when necessary, including therapeutic education and financial understanding.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads, develops, and manages the Pharmacy team to ensure it delivers its services in an organized, efficient, and compliant way. Contributes and supports the creation of pharmaceutical policies and procedures.
  • Manages drug inventory strategically with our partners to ensure streamlined operations, including close collaboration with suppliers/wholesalers.
  • Assures compliance with state rules and regulations with Indiana State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Oversees and monitors dispensing of all oral medication including samples in accordance with all state regulatory agencies.
  • Partners with the Director of Nursing and site managers to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operation of the infusion clinics at all sites.
  • Continued development and accordance of pharmacy policy and procedure regarding access, distribution, admixture, safety, and administration including handling and disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Tracks medication errors and drug reactions in coordination with COO and Director of Nursing.
  • Works with physicians and COO and Director of Nursing to develop pharmaceutical, chemotherapy and other policies and procedures.
  • Monitors OSHA and other state and federal regulatory agencies and compliance programs for areas of responsibility. Oversees auditing and reporting of non-compliance.
  • Performs the duties required of an admixture technician as necessary.
  • Provides multi-disciplinary care by coordinating with clinical staff.
  • Coordinates pharmaceutical resources for educational opportunities for all clinical staff.
  • Proactively Advises the COO, Director of Nursing, physicians, and site managers on all material matters affecting the pharmaceutical services at MHO.
  • Coordinate annual updates of current staff in proper admixture techniques, monitors competency skills checklist to ensure highest quality of service.
  • Act as a resource to clinical staff regarding any information that may be needed on a medication (availability, stability, administration, etc.)
  • Function as liaison for all aspects of the practice with external drug reps/pharmaceutical vendors.
  • Active participation in committees as a representative of pharmacy department (compliance committee, pharma economics and inventory.)
  • Responsible for P&L management for the pharmacy/drug administration and overall strong financial partnerships.
  • Balances clinical and administrative responsibilities, providing guidance and oversight to the Pharmacy team.
  • Supports and/or leads clinical quality, safety, and research initiatives in partnership with the COO and others on the leadership team.
  • Other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


  • 5 years of experience in Oncology/Hematology setting is required or residency trained. Management and supervisory background in this specialty is preferred.
  • College degree from an accredited college of pharmacy; additional degrees and certifications preferred
  • Hold and maintain a current license from the State Board of Pharmacy
  • Must be organized with the ability to maintain attention to detail in all matters pertaining to patient care and reporting of pharmaceutical inventory
  • Knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 coding, J-codes, AWP and Medicare reimbursement
