JOB SUMMARY
We are looking for an analytical, empathetic and effective communicator to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be organized, self-motivated, and be comfortable working in a wide range of settings including schools. To be successful this person will be highly organized with knowledge of prevention programs and services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, public/behavioral health or related field [official transcripts required upon hire];
  • Two (2) years’ experience in education;
  • One (1) year of experience in social work, public/behavioral health, substance abuse prevention, mental and emotional disorders prevention, violence prevention or other closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of the above-defined professional experience for each year of the required education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree education, social work, public/behavioral health or related field [official transcripts required upon hire];
  • Current Prevention Specialist certification;
  • Knowledge of systems level prevention and/or health promotion science.

  • Thorough knowledge of evidence-based and best practice alcohol, drug, violence, suicide and bullying prevention programs/strategies and the principles of Coordinated School Health/School Health Index;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. Department of Education’s Principles of Effectiveness and Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services’ (ODMHSAS) standards/framework for prevention;
  • Thorough knowledge of available mental health, substance abuse, and social services / resources for youth and families;
  • Experience providing individual/group consultation and training to schools or youth serving organizations on health/safety and prevention;
  • Ability to address needs of the whole child including life-skills and academic success;
  • Knowledge and experience using a Multi-Tiered System of Support for prevention services;
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state school laws, rules and regulations;
  • Knowledge of the procedures and techniques of preparing grant applications and state contracts;
  • Ability to adapt to an automated work environment using technology; to maintain quality documentation and records;
  • Establish a prevention program that combines resources and expertise of OSDE and ODMHSAS for the purpose of integrating and promoting evidence-based prevention resources to improve student achievement; collaborate with staff from OSDE and ODMHSAS to achieve goals;
  • Promote evidence-based school and community-based prevention programs/strategies to local education agencies;
  • Partner with community groups to raise awareness of and decrease bullying; provide counseling and assistance to schools on alcohol and drug prevention strategies;
  • Provide consultation/technical assistance to individuals and local education agencies on issues of best practice alcohol, drug, violence, mental and emotional disorders, bullying prevention and healthy school climate; respond to inquiries for information;
  • Organize professional development in evidence-based prevention programs/services to disseminate current ideas, methods, techniques, and uses of materials at elementary, middle and secondary levels;
  • Coordinate training and technical assistance to local education agencies on issues of safe and healthy school practices and prevention related to alcohol, drugs, violence, mental and emotional disorders, and bullying;
  • Represent OSDE at related partner agency councils and committees;
  • Liaison with the ODMHSAS and Department of Health on coordination of student behavior surveys;
  • Identify/prepare funding applications for eligible school-based prevention services; maintain program records and prepare high quality reports as required;
TRAVEL
  • 30% in-state/out-of-state travel may be required to conduct, facilitate and/or attend meetings and trainings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This is a field-based position and requires travel in and around Oklahoma, with occasional visits to the Oklahoma State Department of Education in Oklahoma City for departmental meetings and trainings;
  • The work environment for this position includes:
    • Home office setting;
    • Travel to school districts in Oklahoma.
  • Occasional periods of standing, reaching, and bending;
  • While performing the duties of the job, employee is frequently required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine/printer, office telephone;
  • Frequently ascends/descends stairs;
  • Frequently communicates with others accurately and effectively;
  • Frequently lift to 25 lbs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis;
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check;
  • Must possess a US drivers’ license to perform necessary job-related travel.
