Northrop Grumman’s Employee Communications team seeks a Director Communications 2 to lead employee and executive communications for Northrop Grumman’s four business sectors.

This position reports to the Employee Communications Vice President and is located in Falls Church, VA with a need to travel up to 10% of the time.

In this job, you’ll:

  • Lead a large, diverse, geographically-dispersed team of Employee and Executive Communications professionals charged with informing and inspiring employees and driving business priorities within the company’s four business sectors. This role requires a leader with excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong judgement, problem solving and organizational skills, superb attention to detail and the ability to interpret business priorities in a simple, compelling way for diverse audiences across the company.

  • Serve as a partner and trusted advisor to executive and Communications leaders, providing insights, perspective and counsel on communications strategies and issues.

  • Influence and oversee the planning, implementation and measurement of complex employee, executive, culture and change communications strategies, plans and tactics that are aligned to the company’s highest business priorities, culture and values. Ensure strategic alignment among teams and plans. Tactics include: strategic plans, executive prep documents, talking points, speeches, stories, videos, employee announcements, newsletters, editorial calendars, internal website strategies and maintenance, content and logistics for virtual and in person webcasts, Town Halls, site visits, conferences and ceremonies, and more.

  • Partner with the enterprise Communications team in implementing enterprise-wide employee campaigns within the sectors, ensuring all communications strategies and tactics are consistent with the company’s strategic vision and reflect the Northrop Grumman brand. Provide an informed perspective to enterprise leaders on the sector environment, priorities, issues and opportunities that ladder to enterprise priorities.

  • Drive continuous improvement of communications plans, tactics and processes through disciplined measurement, analysis and adjustment. Be an advocate for measurement within the organization. Support team in translating metrics into actionable intelligence for the organization, and influence team in making data-driven decisions.

  • Spearhead operational efficiency and effectiveness initiatives in an effort to increase integration, speed and empowerment across the Employee Communications organization. Initiatives include management of cross-sector events, communications plans and tactics, and message/process alignment activities.

  • In close partnership with the Enterprise Employee Communications director and local teams, serve as a key leader and information liaison during emergencies that impact sector employees and sites.

  • Serve as the lead communicator on enterprise-wide employee, executive, culture and change communications activities and special projects, as directed.

  • Are curious, analytical and willing to challenge the status quo to propose and pilot new, creative solutions, tools and technologies using strategic rationale and business need to build your case.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing or a related field and a minimum of 15 years of experience, or a Master's degree in prior fields and 13 years of experience

  • Experience in employee and executive communications , media, public relations or brand communications

  • Experience managing people

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong judgement, problem solving and organizational skills, superb attention to detail and the ability to interpret business initiatives in a simple, compelling way for diverse audiences across the company.

  • Proficient in Associated Press Style

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (M365, Teams, Word, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active security clearance

  • Change management certification, such as Prosci

  • Communications and leadership experience with large, complex organizations

  • International relations, global business experience is a plus

  • Experience with communications tools including website content management systems such as SharePoint and other digital communications tools such as Teams and Smartsheet

  • Familiarity with the Adobe Suite of products and a basic understanding of HTM is a plus.

  • Experience producing omni-channel editorial content for a newspaper, news channel, video, magazine or other venue.

This position reports to Falls Church, VA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Linthicum, MD, MD, USA.



Salary Range: $202,600 USD - $303,800 USD


Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
