Job Description

As Development Director you will have overall responsibility for developing a pipeline of early to late-stage utility-scale projects to financial close.

TotalEnergies Renewables USA (TERUSA) seeks a seasoned utility-scale solar development professional to manage a portfolio of utility scale solar projects in various stages of development, as well as oversee the greenfield development strategy for specified markets, to support TERUSA’s mandate for achieving over 1GW/year of renewable energy. The growing Development team is made up of experts who are nimble and ready to collaborate to meet market demands. In addition to executing project development, this position will act as mentor to, and leader of, junior team members.

This position directly reports to the Chief Development Officer.

HSE&Q:
As Development Director you will comply with all applicable TotalEnergies, U.S. Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSE&Q) requirements and supporting standards. Such duties include being familiar with and setting a personal example in adherence to the TotalEnergies HSE MAESTRO Management System; taking responsibility for their own safety and that of fellow workers; reporting any anomaly, near miss, or incident; and actively participating in HSE Meetings, HSE & Sustainability Moments, training sessions and drills.

Context and environment

Austin, Texas (preferred), will consider remote positions.
Willingness to travel as needed to assure the project’s completion on time and within budget.
  • Manage early-, mid- and late-stage projects (all activities required to bring a project to NTP and financial close/sale, including securing sites, perfecting real estate, environmental and local permitting, and related site studies, negotiating tax abatements, community engagement, and evaluating and coordinating interconnection activities)
  • Coordinate activities to establish and negotiate financeable lease/purchase options and site control agreements with landowners. As needed, contract and supervise local land agents.
  • Manage third-party and internal project development teams to achieve the development activities above.
  • Collaborate with the technical, engineering, finance, and asset management teams with respect to the development activities above.
  • Collaborate across these teams to evaluate project development risks and project valuation assumptions.
  • Create and oversee greenfield development strategy within specified region(s) based on market size and project availability, interconnection, permitting, project pricing, irradiance, basis, and alignment of the company's overall strategy, finance and construction team requirements, objectives, and milestones.
  • Maintain CRM to review strategy and report out on activity associated with development efforts
  • Manage development budgets, project scheduling/planning and risks assessment
  • Participate in project handover to Asset Management
  • Assist in developing competitive offtake pricing and competitive analysis (when applicable)
  • Coordinate the preparation of all materials for project finance and sell-down activities
  • Contribute to TERUSA Budget and Long-Term Plan exercises and implementation

Candidate profile

  • Education: 4-year degree, Master’s preferred
  • Work Experience: 7-10 years in renewable energy development (at least 2 years in utility scale solar/storage, eastern markets preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, people, and strategic objectives; Project Management Professional certification preferred
  • Team oriented with a positive disposition
  • Strong communication skills and ability to summarize complex issues and convey information to enable efficient decision making
  • Experience managing direct reports
