Job Description
WAER seeks a development professional to lead annual, individual and major gift programs, along with planned giving and grant acquisitions for WAER Public Media. The station is licensed to Syracuse University and is part of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The Director of Membership Development will work jointly with the Newhouse School’s Office of Development & Alumni Engagement, and WAER development staff to manage: day-to-day fundraising activities; on-air member drives; major donor acquisition and engagement; alumni support and engagement; planned giving; and grant writing efforts. The Membership Director also leads communications with donors and members through digital and social media, as well as personal engagements and events.

The successful development professional serves as liaison with Syracuse University and Newhouse Communications development offices.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications or related field;
  • A minimum of 3 years of successful management and fundraising experience in higher education and/or sales, public relations or communications preferred;
  • Prior experience with fundraising, donor, or customer relations management software (CITRUS CRM a plus);
  • Event creation and management experience
  • Familiarity with design software such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or similar;
  • Facility with social media platforms, creating messages, posting and scheduling, maximizing engagement;
  • Experience with email generator programs;
  • Supervisory experience and working with students a plus.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Successful candidate will have prior fundraising and membership experience, knowledge of customer relationship management (CRM) software, skills with email generator programs.
  • These will allow for success in engagement with audience and alumni to provide funding support for WAER’s ongoing missions of engaging the Central New York Community and providing professional development opportunities to students.
  • The Membership Development Director will also have communication skills, donor-relations experience, including social media platform experience, design skills for various communications strategies.
  • These skills will help manage the communications, marketing and engagement portion of the job, which helps cultivate community and alumni donors.
  • Other valuable skills include: grant research and writing; budgeting and goals assessment; interpersonal communications abilities; ability to work successfully in a team; attention to detail; ability to work on multiple tasks and observe a variety of deadlines for projects & responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Membership development and management. Develop, implement and revise strategies to identify, acquire, retain, manage and steward donors. This includes all on-air campaigns; mail and email solicitations, segmentation and acquisitions consistent with current and emerging public media best practices; major gift development identification, solicitation, and cultivation of new and existing donors with capacity of $1000 – $5000+; donor relations strategies to manage and deepen engagement; planning and execution of events to engage listeners, donors and alumni; management of database and communications systems for membership; development of goals and budgets for department, as well as analysis to maximize impact and increase revenue. Report results of all gifts/solicitation efforts in the CITRUS/CRM database including meaningful interactions ensuring the accuracy of all entries.
  • Marketing and Communications. Develop and implement newsletters, email, social media, and other engagement activities for listener, member, alumni and other audiences; Collaborate with content team on social media promotion and marketing of WAER content; help design and develop materials for digital promotion of WAER content, activities, events, personalities, missions.
  • Alumni fundraising & engagement. Responsible for communicating to and engaging with WAER’s extensive alumni network by: preparing alumni newsletters; creating and executing alumni fundraising appeals; working in collaboration with Newhouse School’s Office of Development & Alumni Engagement on alumni fundraising strategies; managing WAER Hall of Fame selection and events.
  • Grant writing. Responsible for identifying and applying for external grants that support WAER content and education efforts, as well as digital and broadcast equipment upgrades and special initiatives; Work with Newhouse School’s Office of Development & Alumni Engagement and other WAER station staff on researching and applying for such grant opportunities.
  • The Membership Marketing Director is a part of the WAER management staff, expected to participate in strategic planning for content, community engagement, student participation and other goals and initiatives.
