Holt Public Schools Position: Custodian - Elliott Elementary

12 Month Position, 1 FTE

6:30AM – 3:00 PM

6 AM-2:30 PM (Winter)

ABOUT HOLT PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

Holt Public Schools is located in the Lansing metropolitan region. It is primarily located in Ingham County with portions in Eaton County. We provide educational programs from Early Childhood through and beyond 12th grade including access to Early College programming and Career and Technical Education. Our current enrollment totals approximately 5,250 students. REQURIED QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school graduate

· Ability to read basic instructions, use computer, write reports

· Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned tasks

· Has a good work record regarding ability, punctuality, cooperation and dependability

· Must have established a reputation of being honest and trustworthy and possess a high moral character

· This job requires the ability to lift, bend, twist, push, pull and various other repetitive physical motions as indicated in the Physical Requirements Section

Education and/or experience:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Two years of previous building maintenance experience

Communication skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to use computer, write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively and correspond with staff members and contractors
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Uses computer for email, online training.

Other skills and abilities:

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community

· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables

· Applicant must be able to perform and complete tasks with time constraints

· Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

· Uses electronic work order system, Custodial Supply order system, Building Energy Management system, SafeSchools and other computer programs as directed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk/hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate vibrating machinery. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be able to lift 50 lbs on a consistent basis, 100 lbs occasionally. The employee must be comfortable working with heights over 6’; tunnels and confined spaces.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, chlorine, sprays and non-household dust. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES - CUSTODIAL:

1. Sweeps, vacuums (mops as needed) assigned classrooms daily

2. Maintains sidewalks. Plows snow and salts the ice

3. Dusts furniture, ledges and shelves on a weekly basis

4. Cleans assigned corridors during school each day

5. Keeps all floors, in assigned area, in a clean and attractive condition

6. Complies with local laws and procedures established by the Facilities Supervisor for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste

7. Makes such minor building repairs, as he/she is capable of.

Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal and Facilities Manager

8. Assists in moving furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal

9. Assists in keeping building and premises, including sidewalks, roofs, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times

10. Makes sure appropriate doors are open and cooperates with groups who have permission to utilize school facilities

11. Makes sure that needed supplies such as soap and paper are maintained in classrooms and restrooms.

12. Cleans sinks daily

13. Keeps window glass, hallway glass, and glass in classroom doors clean

14. Participates in necessary painting and general repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general mechanical areas

15. Cleans assigned drinking fountains daily

16. Cleans marks off walls and doors

17. Maintains equipment used in a neat and orderly manner

18. Is responsible for immediately making out, in writing, any accident, injury, vandalism or theft report, to his/her supervisor

19. Clean all classrooms assigned:

a) Empties trash, pencil sharpeners, wastebaskets, etc.

b) Dusts window ledges, chalk trays, shelves, teacher’s desks, and filing cabinets, etc., weekly

c) Cleans glass – mirrors, doors, windows as needed

Physical Requirements for this position:

Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling. Continuous bending/stooping.
