In accordance with the Agreement between American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced:

Position Summary

The DPSCD is seeking an experienced individual(s) to fill the above stated 52-week custodian positions. The individual(s) must have a strong desire to assist the District in maintaining a clean and safe environment for students enrolled in various school locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates for this position must be a high school graduate or proof of GED certificate.

  • In the event that there is no successful candidate available who holds a valid Michigan (Interim) Occupation Education Certificate, candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years industry experience. Experience must be within 2 years of application. The right candidate must be student-focused and foster a positive student-learning environment including:

  • Knowledge and expertise in the use of custodial equipment and floor care machines.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and accept changes in job duties.

  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook.

  • Proficient in reading and understanding hazards associated with storage and use of chemicals.

Essential Functions:

  • Work Monday through Friday with some weekend hours in support of Community Use of Schools.

  • Clean classroom and office desktops, dust furniture, clean window sills and check for spider webs, clean sinks, check and replenish paper towel and soap dispensers, clean air vents in ceilings and floors, clean all tile floor, clean whiteboard, chalkboard trays, pick up garbage and vacuum rooms, actively look for carpet spots and report to lead custodian.

  • Clean all restrooms and dry all chrome and stainless-steel fixtures with dry rag, clean walls, floors, check and replenish toilet paper, paper towels, and soap dispensers.

  • Make sure that all doors and gates are locked, and alarms are set.

  • Conduct weekly Quality Assurance inspection with Lead Custodian.

  • Work to remediate/eliminate contributory conditions that facilitate the presence of pests.

  • Be familiar with the job descriptions of all custodial positions in the district to be able to substitute in those positions where assigned.

  • Complete duties of other shifts and team member Custodians as assigned.

  • Perform custodial duties as indicated by daily, weekly, monthly, biannual, and annual schedules.

  • Perform light maintenance duties as assigned.

  • Work independently and cooperatively as needed to complete work as assigned.

  • Keep building and premises (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat and clean at all times.

  • Immediately report damaged school property to the principal.

  • Make minor building repairs, promptly reporting needed major repairs to the Lead Custodian.

  • Respond to service requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.

  • Keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

  • Promote a caring, helping attitude toward staff, students, and patrons.

  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Custodian or Operations Leadership.

  • Other general duties include cleaning, mopping, lifting, sweeping, trash collection, snow removal, lifting, climbing ladders, dusting, grounds care and disposal of waste from classrooms/offices/conference rooms, lavatories and lunchroom in support of other custodial staff efforts to maintain a clean learning and working environment.

  • Implement and follow all health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan. Must maintain annual training in AHERA, and IPM and Hazard Communication and any certification for maintain a clean and safe environment.

  • Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Custodian (or Designee).

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
