I. POSITION IDENTIFICATION

Title: Crisis Counselor

Current Classification:

Pay Range: $25 - $30 per hour

Non-Exempt Part-time or Full-time Temporary (approx. 9 months)

II. ASSIGNED DUTIES AND TASKS

Position overview:

The Montana Crisis Recovery program was created to provide outreach to Montanans impacted by the flooding events in Park, Stillwater, Carbon, and Yellowstone counties. As individuals and communities navigate the loss of possessions and livelihood and seek to rebuild, the impacts on mental health can be devastating. A crisis counselor can offer an empathetic ear, provide support and assistance in locating resources, and help navigate feelings of isolation, loss, fear, uncertainty, depression, and anxiety.

Essential functions:

These duties are the essential functions and are not all-inclusive of all duties that the incumbent performs:

· Works with individuals, families, and groups to provide outreach, emotional support, individual and group crisis counseling, public education, and referrals virtually, listen without judgement, offer information and education on stress and coping skills, direct callers to additional support and community resources. FREE, ANONYMOUS service, we will never ask for a name unless offered to us, nor health insurance, or pay for a fee of any kind.

· Is synonymous with the term “outreach worker.” Crisis counselors deliver services “outreach” in the communities rather than wait for survivors to seek their assistance during their shifts.

· Represents the program in the community and networks with other agencies and partners to ensure needs of survivors are met.

· Crisis Counselors do not classify, label, or diagnose people, no records or case files or notes should be kept.

· Provides presentations to community groups on disaster reactions, coping skills, stress management, and the disaster response program.

Expectations:

· Be available during their shifts and responsive to emails.

· Give a 10-14 day notice for any requested time off, unless it’s an emergency.

· All calls coming into the crisis counseling line are anonymous. However, if the crisis counselor assesses the caller as being suicidal or at imminent risk to themselves or others, the call will be referred to a mental health professional or the Montana Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 988 and 211, which may result in an emergency response being initiated.

· Data collection reporting – each employee will be responsible for logging in their calls after each call during their shifts.

· Be available for all mandatory training, including Core Content Training (which is an 8-hour training – broken into 2 days, 4 hours each day), and independent trainings.

· Supervision will be done throughout the week to provide support and guidance to each crisis counselor.

· Team meetings are mandatory, 1 hour per every other week.

· Mountain Pacific Quality Health and will organize meetings with all crisis counselors and the State as needed.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

Performs other duties as assigned by the Park County Health Department. Duties of the position are subject to change. This job may include special projects and a variety of other functions as needed.

III. KNOWLEDGE

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel, as well as able to effectively use email and the Internet.
  • Good interpersonal skills, team oriented, enjoy working with others, as you will need to work closely with many stakeholders, community members, and mental health consumers.
  • Organized, highly motivated, flexible, good time-management skills.
  • Have a computer/Internet service.

· Travel is required with this position. Candidate must have a reliable vehicle and mileage is reimbursed at $.655 per mile

· Candidate must be willing to submit and pass a background check as part of the application process.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma, GED or HiSET. Some research and data collection experience would be helpful. Demonstrated skills on personal computers preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current Montana Driver’s License. To complete Core Content Training once hired (which is an 8-hour training – broken into 2 days, 4 hours each day), and independent trainings.

IV. ACCOUNTABILITY

These services are part of the comprehensive effort to improve to provide outreach to Montanans impacted by the flooding events in Park, Stillwater, Carbon, and Yellowstone counties. The Crisis Counselor will work closely with the Park County Health Department, other agencies and partners, and individuals, families, and groups in the community.

V. CONFIDENTIALLY

The position requires handling non-public confidential information. The person in the position acknowledges the confidential nature of non-public information regarding individuals experiencing crisis. The person in the position hereby acknowledges and understands that in this context, confidential information is considered all non-public information that can be personally associated with an individual.

If in the course of executing job responsibilities, the person in the position accidentally accesses information that others might consider inappropriate for this position to access, the person in the position will notify the person’s supervisors of the date and time of the access. If a question arises at a later time, it will be understood that the access was accidental. The person in the position will not disseminate any such information.

VI. INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION

This position plans and carries out most assignments independently, and uses judgment and initiative to solve problems, under the supervision of the Park County Health Department. Work objectives and priorities are defined above.

VII. PERSONAL CONTACTS

This position has contacts with the public, other county personnel, elected officials, department heads, and community services representatives in order to be responsive to questions and inquiries regarding the Montana Crisis Recovery Program.

VIII. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in an office environment and in the community and requires typical range of motion and physical agility associated with the operation of equipment required to fulfill the duties of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee has occasional to frequent contact with body fluids and appropriate personal protective equipment is provided.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. On a regular basis, the employee is required to talk or hear. Requires occasional physical exertion.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; moving to set up various clinics. Will require occasional use of protective clothing and equipment. Requires travel to remote sites.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
