Job Summary


The Counselor will perform a wide array of functions addressing students' personal and educational needs including counseling services of a remedial, preventative and developmental nature for students who are experiencing psychological, social or emotional distress relating to a wide array of concerns. In keeping with State of Georgia law, individuals in this position should be licensed or license-eligible as a Professional Counselor, Clinical Social Worker or Psychologist in Georgia, and work with supervision under the direction of someone licensed and approved by the State Board of Examiners until licensure is attained.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling for students with personal or educational concerns.
  • Conduct structured seminars, groups, presentations, and other outreach programs centered on personal and educational development in areas such as stress management, substance abuse prevention, relationship issues and sexual assault prevention.
  • Support the center's crisis intervention efforts, daytime and after-hours crisis consultation activities, on-call operations, and counselor-on-call activities.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, and other personnel including external agencies, about the developmental and mental health needs of students, and work cooperatively with them for the benefit of students and the institution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling, clinical social work or closely related discipline.
  • Licensed or license eligible in Georgia as a psychologist, or professional counselor or clinical social worker.
  • Two years experience in providing counseling;

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of providing counseling in a university counseling center preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement short and long range goals; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and university officials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the principles of student development and psychological theories, and knowledge of clinical service delivery systems in college/university counseling centers; knowledge of professional ethical guidelines associated with counseling practice; knowledge of the various laws (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.) that impact counseling service provision in university counseling centers. Knowledge of diversity as it relates to counseling and outreach.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Expertise in providing mental health services to college/university students, with demonstrated skills in and a commitment to providing clinical and outreach services to diverse populations.
