The Communications Specialist reports to the Manager of Marketing and Communications and assists them in five general areas: Writing/Editing, Media Relations, Internal Communications, Strategic Planning, and Community Relations, with a focus on supporting Benefis’ outpatient and hospital services.

  • Develop and implement brand communications for internal and external communication channels.
  • Develop earned media strategies and messaging for Benefis initiatives, new service lines, business ventures, and sensitive media queries.
  • Translate highly obscure topics into easily understandable and actionable content appropriate for employees and the public.
  • Shares responsibility for managing production of regularly scheduled internal communications, including gathering and compiling content, editing, formatting, layout, and image selection.
  • Work with stakeholders at unclassified and classified levels to create clear and concise communications including briefings, talking points, and editorials.
  • Understand our products, policies, services, and objectives and distill these into easy-to-understand and connected communications.
  • Assists with development, editing, and formatting of PowerPoints and other materials for use at public presentations.
  • Shares responsibility for managing production of regularly scheduled internal communications, including gathering and compiling content, editing, formatting, layout, and image selection.
  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to make sure all outreach efforts are aligned and coordinated with Corporate Communications, Marketing, Legislative Affairs, Foundation, and Regional Relations strategies, among others.
  • Promptly respond to general media queries to sustain positive relationships with local, regional, and state media outlets.
  • Monitor Benefis mentions, statewide healthcare coverage, and other relevant news.
  • Protect patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) by following all patient privacy policies and protocols, and obtaining the proper release forms before any patient identifiers or other information is released to the media.
  • Use brand standards to write memorable, compelling, and engaging content in an audience appropriate tone including investor and employee communications, press releases, content for our career sites, blogs, social media postings and change management communications.
  • Interview all onboarding Benefis providers and develop biographies for the providers.
  • Provides editing support for all communications produced by the department.
  • Ability to effectively multitask and manage multiple projects, with both short-term and long-term deadlines.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with senior leaders and executives with sophistication and tact.
  • Ability to take complex topics and simplify them for general audiences.
  • Ability to adjust writing style/voice for various audiences, including employees, the media, and patients.
  • Coordinates review, processing of payments, and communication of approval/denial of donation and sponsorship requests for the system.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor degree required.

Two (2) years professional work experience preferred.

At least one year working in a healthcare related field preferred.
