Job Summary:
SunOpta is looking for a highly driven, creative and passionate Communications Manager who will develop and execute internal and external communications strategies to promote and enhance SunOpta’s brand, culture and sustainability mission. This individual will be an outstanding writer with a passion for storytelling, a deep understanding of public relations strategy, and a love of turning complex business and innovation accomplishments into compelling and timely news. They will be self-motivated, proactive and eager to take ownership of their work and business they support.

They will provide thought leadership and be responsible for tracking and documenting news, events and trends across the industry to inform strategy and other key stakeholders. They will also help manage and shape the external "brand'' of our key team members across appropriate channels including media and speaking engagements.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Support the development and execution of an annual communications plan that supports company goals.
  • Assist in defining SunOpta’s corporate news agenda and partner with subject matter experts across the company to uncover storytelling opportunities.
  • Develop media relations strategies, story ideas, pitch angles and conduct proactive media relations activities with key news media.
  • Develop, plan and manage content, including messaging, press releases, social media content, employee newsletter, award entries, photography and video content, blog posts and presentations.
  • Provide strategic communications counsel to business leaders to drive the organization forward.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally across the enterprise to ensure communications planning, execution and messaging is integrated and linked with company positions and corporate goals.

The ideal candidate will possess these skills:
  • Experience with managing and executing plans on social media platforms.
  • Proven track record developing and executing successful B2B and/or B2C corporate communications, content, and corporate brand campaigns.
  • Extraordinary writing, storytelling and editing ability, with demonstrated experience harmonizing messages and distilling complex concepts into simple communications.
  • Ability to manage complex, fast-moving, and unexpected communications issues with high level of professionalism in a fast-paced, ever changing, growth environment.
  • Ability to interact with senior leadership to influence strategy and mitigate risk.
  • Proven success in building and cultivating relationships with key stakeholders and working effectively with executive leadership.
  • Experience in the retail food and CPG industry.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or greater with preferred focus on marketing, communications or business.
  • Experience: 3+ years in public relations or corporate communications roles.
Additional Considerations:
  • Travel Expectation: Up to 5%.
  • Location: This position will be located at the SunOpta Corporate Office in Eden Prairie, MN.
