We are looking for a budding storyteller to craft a breadth of content, from short-form videos to social media graphics and email copy. They will also contribute to our overall communications strategy and are keen to grow their content production and execution skills across various social and digital platforms.

The Communications Assistant is an entry-level role that reports to the Senior Communications Manager. They will work within the broader Development and Communications Department at the Center, which is led by the Director of Development and Communications. They are a vital member of the Center's staff, with a core responsibility of assisting the Senior Communications Manager with strengthening and expanding the Center's branding and communication efforts to show the Center's deep community impact. The Communications Assistant will work cross-departmentally to develop short and long-term communications and promotional content through social media, email, blog posts, and video. This position also assists the Senior Communications Manager with writing for the fundraising team and supports written communications, such as copy-editing, across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Senior Communications Manager with developing, maintaining, and strengthening the Center's communications channels, brand identity, voice, and storytelling.
  • Assist the Senior Communications Manager with creating visual content and written material for owned communications channels—including social media platforms, email newsletters, short-form videos, Center blog, and more.
  • Create, curate, and post original content on the Center's social channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram) and email platforms, aligning with Center's mission, programming, services, and factors in relevant community conversations and conversation trends.
  • Support the Senior Communications Manager in working cross-departmentally to develop strategic programming messaging. Partner with staff, under the guidance of the Communications Manager, to ensure brand consistency across all promotional materials, building communications goals, and institutionalizing best practices.
  • Serve as the primary responder to community messages received across social media and email channels. Assist with developing relationships with bloggers and influencers.
  • Support with measuring and tracking community engagement across social and email channels.
  • Support the Senior Communications Manager in partnering with the Director of Development & Communications to develop fundraising messages and generate communications to grow contributed income (excludes grant writing).
  • Support the Senior Communications Manager with maintaining the organization's website—including writing content, aesthetic quality, information architecture, and overall user experience.
  • If desired, potential to assist the Senior Communications Manager with media relations—creating press advisories and releases, fielding reporter inquiries, and facilitating press conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You are curious and possess strong communications skills. Ability to juggle multiple projects in a timely manner.
  • At least 1 year of experience in social media or other communications roles is ideal, but not required. LGBTQ+-related communications experience is a plus.
  • Strong writing (social media captions, blog writing, copy-editing), and visual content creation skills preferred. You care that materials are on brand, easy to read, and convey the right tone.
  • Experience working with social media platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook as well as social media management/creation tools such as Canva, and Sprout Social is a plus.
  • Strong interest in building short-form video skills for platforms such as IG Reels.
  • Experience working with email platforms such as Mailchimp, Pardot, or Constant Contact, and/or basic knowledge of HTML is a plus.
  • Desire to use visuals, research, and partnership + community testimonials to tell stories.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interest in keeping a pulse on current community trends, conversations, and cultural zeitgeist. Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing social and digital tools.
  • Inquisitive and entrepreneurial approach, including solution-oriented approaches to complex issues. Ability to learn and internalize new information, concepts, and practices.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.
  • High standards of personal ethics, professionalism, and respectful communication.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive information with tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Commitment to the mission of the SF LGBT Center and a strong commitment to racial, social, and economic justice. Interested in learning about the needs of underserved LGBTQ+ communities and the ability to work with a broad range of constituents and stakeholders representing LGBTQ+ people and allied communities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position is primarily office-based at the Center’s 1800 Market Street location with an ability to negotiate a schedule of remote work up to a maximum of 40% time.
