JOB SUMMARY
Working closely with the co-chair, Conservatory administration, faculty, and staff, the co-chair of NEC’s Jazz Studies department plays an integral role in advancing the department’s tradition of creativity and experimentation. The ideal candidate for this faculty/administrative position is an innovative educator, performer, administrator, composer, and/or arranger who personifies the diverse perspectives of global jazz traditions. Committed to the highest standards of musicianship and possessing a keen understanding of the professional aspirations of conservatory jazz majors, the co-chair provides career guidance, mentorship, and connections to the field, helping prepare NEC jazz students for meaningful lives in music.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Co-chair a department of approximately 90 undergraduate and graduate students, a faculty of thirty-five artist/teachers, and administrative staff.
  • Teach studio lessons, coach graduate and undergraduate ensembles, and/or teach core courses in jazz theory, history, and repertoire.
  • Mentor and advise students.
  • With co-chair, oversee admissions auditions, actively recruit new students, and develop ongoing strategies to yield and retain students, and contribute to student success.
  • Carry out essential departmental administrative work, including supervising auditions, end-of-year promotionals (performance examinations), testing of prospective and returning students, and placing students in ensembles and classes.
  • Contribute to jazz season programming; attend departmental performances.
  • Participate in faculty trainings and departmental meetings.
  • Identify new faculty and participate in hiring process; participate in the evaluation of current faculty.
  • Enhance the department’s high standards of aural training, historical and theoretical study, musicianship skills, performance and composition through the development of assessment processes.
  • Contribute to a learning environment that is responsive to student, faculty, and staff needs.
  • Serve on faculty committees.
  • Other responsibilities as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS*

  • At least 10 years of active performing career with a high-level, international profile with a strong record of accomplishment as a performer, composer, arranger, and/or teacher of jazz and improvisation.
  • Master’s degree or commensurate experience strongly preferred, ideally with experience in teaching and administration in a high-level conservatory jazz program.
  • Capacity to recruit, retain, teach, and mentor a diverse student body of the highest quality.
  • Knowledge of the current trends in conservatory jazz programs and the profession.
  • Experience with curricular design, in collaboration with college faculty and staff, that encourages musical excellence and artistic curiosity across a diverse range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in a conservatory setting.
  • Strong administrative ability to articulate and realize concrete measures for implementing the work of a strategic vision.
  • Exceptional judgment, discretion, and integrity when working with students in an educational environment.
  • Demonstrated dedication to supporting the development of musicians and promoting music’s role in society.
  • Ability to represent the department effectively with external and internal constituencies.
  • Commitment to NEC’s values of cultural equity and belonging.
