Clinical Dietician Job Description

The Dietitian interprets the discipline of food and nutrition into the provision of a service designed to improve or maintain the nutritional/health status of both inpatients and outpatients.

Responsible for all food service database maintenance, analysis, development, report writing, configuration, testing, integration, and training to ensure effective data management. Maintains the software systems that integrate the facility’s retail, production, clinical and patient services function of the department. Supports functions for the system implementation, data analysis, auditing function, and evaluation of outcomes and system effectiveness. Interfaces with CBORD, a nutrition management system for healthcare, information systems and food services management to ensure coordination of processes, effective and timely response to identified problems, and quality outcomes.


JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Dietitian develops nutrition care plans and implements Medical Nutrition Therapy and Nutrition Support for patients, as prescribed by the physician, and facilitates the effective resolution of nutrition care problems that occur.

Oversees the daily nutrition care activities of the CDM/DTR, and determines and/or approves appropriate dietary/nutrition interventions based on nutrition screenings, meal round visitations, and physician orders.

Advises the Nutrition Services Manager concerning policies and procedures relevant to Clinical Nutrition Services, Interdisciplinary Care, and Patient Food Services.

Provides direction for the nutrition services staff regarding the implementation of special diets, patient food production, tray line functions, and patient-related services.

Provides clinical nutrition education and in-service education to nutrition services staff, nursing staff, nutrition student interns, and clinical care providers, as needed.

Participates in quality improvement projects and patient satisfactory initiatives

Provides clinical nutrition and production management support in the absence of the Nutrition Services Manager.

Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy consultations to outpatients, upon referral by the patient’s physician.

DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

Provides support to testing efforts as needed for system upgrades, interfaces and other initiatives as appropriate.

Develops and performs preventative and routine maintenance of CBORD databases.

Assists the director in evaluating and implementing new software solutions.

Performs file maintenance such as system uploads and downloads as required on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis from all supplier and internal programs.

Develops and maintains department databases, reports, and configures data to meet the needs of internal customers and/or as required by regulatory agencies and standards.

Installs, configures and tests system for future room service implementation.

DATA ANALYSIS

Creates, maintain, analyzes and processes data extraction for reporting purposes (i.e., Intake Analysis, Meal Count Studies, and Clinical Volume Analysis).

Reviews policies and procedures related to the CBORD system.

Makes changes as needed to keep up with hospital wide changes.

EDUCATION

Assists with the development of training materials both electronic and classroom based for existing and new users within food service.

Creates and modified the CBORD competency test for department members to take annually.

EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

Bachelor's: B.S. degree from an accredited college or university in Nutrition and Dietetics or a related field. or equivalent education/experience

OR Master's: Master’s Degree program meeting the American Dietetic Association’s requirements for Dietitian Registration required or completion of a Dietetic internship or equivalent education/experience

Other: Completion of a didactic and clinical program in dietetics approved or accredited by the American Dietetics Association.

Other: Completion of the dietetic registration exam within 6 mos of hire

Other: Maintenance of continued education: meets requirements of Commission on Dietetic Registration and supports professional development in the area assigned (disease/conditions/ages of patients).

OR Other: MS Nutrition or MPH

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

RD-Registered Dietitian

CNSD-Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian

CDE-Certified Diabetes Educator

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

Hospital work experience preferred.

1 year practical experience in CBORD (food management system) administration, project planning, system design and implementation.

1 year in database administration, clinical interfaces, nutrition therapy, report writing, and implementing complex information systems.

1 year in training/implementation systems or project planning.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE


Knowledge of performance improvement and regulatory agency requirements preferred.

Comprehensive knowledge of Clinical Nutrition Services, Medical Nutrition Therapies, Food Production Standards, and a working knowledge of Joint Commission and Health and Safety Codes are preferred.

Well-developed interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively with patients, caregivers, physicians, and staff.

Organizational skills and ability to accomplish work without direct daily supervision as well as in a team environment.

Written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work productively with people who have both similar and different backgrounds

Proven ability to develop and manage a project plan.

Ability to articulate technical and user needs in a concise manner easily understood by all and be able to provide a very high level of customer service.

Excellent communication skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Knowledge of CBORD and diet office, as well as an understanding of food composition.

Pay Range: 47.53-61.79

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
