Chemist (Water Quality Lab)

OUC - The Reliable One, an industry leader and the second largest municipal utility in Florida committed to serving the community and the environment, is presently seeking a Chemist to join the Water Quality Lab team in the Electric & Water Production division.

We are looking for a highly independent, forward-thinking water quality lab professional with a passion for water quality and strong sense of urgency needed to meet deadlines. This role will perform analytical and microbiological testing for OUC’s Water Quality Laboratory and will support our vision of being an innovative solutions leader and partner of choice.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Must possess a current and valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Science-related area of study from an accredited college or university. Minimum of two years laboratory experience with chemical analyses.
  • Working knowledge of Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) regulations preferred.
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills and ability produce accurate data
  • Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal communication skills
  • Water metals testing experience is preferred

Salary Range: $70,452 - $88,066 Annually - commensurate with experience

Job Purpose:

Perform analytical and microbiological testing for OUC’s Water Quality Laboratory. Ensure that duties are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under the supervision of the laboratory supervisor.

Primary Functions:
  • Collect field samples in OUC’s water distribution area and at OUCs Stanton Energy Center (SEC), Indian River Plant (IRP), and Osceola Generation Station (OGS) on a regular basis;
  • Prepare and analyze drinking and non-potable water samples for monitoring and compliance; record results in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
  • Ensure laboratory practices and procedures comply with Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) regulations and standards;
  • Complete evaluation studies (NELAC proficiency testing) twice per year as required;
  • Coordinate projects with laboratory staff, other OUC business units, and subcontract laboratories to maintain the laboratory sampling schedule;
  • Generate reports for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), management, other OUC business units, and external customers;
  • Perform microbiological testing on a routine basis;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

Working knowledge of all, but not limited to, the following:

  • Standard methods for water and wastewater;
  • Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) regulations;
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Software Applications (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), JD Water Quality Lab testing;
  • Related industry, organizational and departmental policies, practices, and procedures; legal guidelines, ordinances, and laws;
  • Must be accountable, dependable and able to work collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Perform microbiological and analytical testing;
  • Comprehend analytical results, quality control reports and technical reports;
  • Provide weekend coverage for bacteriological analysis and phone coverage when needed;
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations;
  • Ability to use software applications listed above and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.).

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or related area of study from an accredited college or university (required)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience with chemical analysis (required); water utility environment, preferred
  • Valid driver’s license

Working Conditions:
This job involves very frequent exposure to toxic/ caustic chemicals. This job may occasionally require working in the presence of moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions, where exposure to insects exists.

Physical Requirements:
This job requires constant speaking, hearing and reading. This job requires very frequent repetitive motions, climbing, typing and writing. This job requires frequent standing, walking and sitting. Additionally, this job requires occasional driving of a company vehicle. This job may require occasional bending/ stooping and rare lifting of up to twenty (20) lbs.
