Position Summary
The UNC Institute for Global health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID) is a multi-departmental center within the School of Medicine which exists to conduct infectious disease-related scientific, clinical, epidemiological, and behavioral research domestically and internationally, as well as to provide technical assistance for the development of HIV care and prevention programs.

This position will be part of a research group affiliated with IGHID and housed group within the Division of Infectious Diseases and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

The Care Navigator position will provide counseling and health systems navigation to research study participants enrolled in HIV prevention and care-related research trials. The Care Navigator will perform tasks such as the following:
  • Link participants to health information and healthcare services.
  • Communicate with research participants via phone, email, and a smartphone-based digital health platform.
  • Assist participants to identify and connect with healthcare providers.
  • Complete appropriate referral paperwork.
  • Provide support to study participants through active empathetic listening.
  • Provide study participants with sources of expert information about the recommended screening, including explaining risks and benefits of sexual health prevention methods and assisting with decision making, if needed.
  • Help participants complete Medicaid enrollment assistance and drug assistance program applications.
  • Share and discuss resources and strategies for supporting health and wellness.
  • Identify community-based and internet-based resources that are culturally sensitive to diverse communities.
  • Help study participants schedule and reschedule STI/HIV screening appointments.
  • Identify each study participant’s unique logistical and emotional needs, as well as other barriers to care, and coordine with other entities to develop effective solutions.
  • Provide appointment reminders and help prepare study participants for the appointments.
  • Support study participants as they navigate the complexities of the clinical environment.
  • Act as a resource to connect study participants to community and social support services.
  • Conduct detailed record-keeping on intervention activities and each study participant’s progress and outcomes.
  • Interactiwith study participants to help them resolve financial, language, transportation, or other barriers to STI/HIV screening and treatment.
  • Other duties, including documenting effort committed to these various tasks and communicating with the study team.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Ability to follow established guidelines for assessing compliance with protocol and manuals of operational procedures.
  • Ability to maintain professional ethics while consistently exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as required for interacting with project participants, data collectors and projects staff and the ability to coordinate the exchange of communication. Most communications with research team members and study participants will occur virtually by phone/computer. Must be comfortable communicating with others in remote settings.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Priority given to applicants with experience working in the field of sexual health, LGBTQ health, health insurance, digital health/telehealth, and patient navigation.
  • Experience working with regulatory and research study teams and academic/community partnership settings preferred.
  • Experience in patient care management and coordinating community resources preferred.
