DEFINITION

Under general direction, performs a variety of duties to maintain and repair city buildings, structures and their attendant equipment. Depending upon need, duties of incumbents in this classification may emphasize a particular trade associated with building maintenance and repair including carpentry, painting, locksmithing, plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from the assigned Operations Services Supervisor and direction by the assigned Operations Services Lead Worker. Exercises no supervisory responsibilities. May direct the work of temporary or part-time staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES

The typical duties outlined in this section are not intended to be an exhaustive list. Incumbents will be expected to also perform more general duties as assigned and as consistent with the classification (e.g. conference room set up).

Carpentry/Metal Working
  • Performs a variety of rough and finish maintenance carpentry work to include plastering and repairing interior and exterior walls, siding and trim.
  • Repairing or replacing windows, doors and frames, building hardware, fencing and gates.
  • Installs shelving.
  • Maintains and repairs roof systems.
  • Prepares surfaces and paints using brushes, rollers and spray equipment, primers and lacquers.
Plumbing
  • Inspects, installs, troubleshoots and repairs plumbing fixtures components including sinks, toilets and faucets.
  • Maintains aquatic center pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and accessory pool equipment.
Electrical
  • Inspects, installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical fixtures, equipment, and related apparatus, including changing ballasts.
HVAC
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair tasks on HVAC and heating equipment to include inspecting and replacing filters, belts; setting economizers and thermostats; repairing or replacing component parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential duties of the job. A typical way to accomplish this includes:

High School graduation or GED equivalent and two years of experience in the building trades or a closely related occupation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The knowledge of generally accepted construction and repair procedures, related safety protocols, and materials used in the areas of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and related trades/crafts.

License:
Valid California driver's license
