Job Description
The Desert Research Institute is seeking a full time Building and Grounds Attendant at the Reno, NV Campus. This position performs a variety of tasks to maintain the campus grounds and buildings.
Duties include:
  • Perform monthly safety inspections of fire extinguishers, exit and emergency lights, and emergency eye wash stations and showers
  • Changing lighting, changing air filters, weekly cooling tower maintenance, painting, window cleaning.
  • Monitor motorpool vehicles for cleaning, and schedule maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintenance of grounds including raking, weeding, irrigation repairs and additions as needed, proper care of landscape trees and shrubbery.
  • Provide assistance with building and campus safety and security.
  • Participate in rotating On-Call schedule for after-hours/weekends alarms and emergencies. Secure all manual locks, gates, and entries when appropriate. Perform building rounds on a rotating basis. Take temperature/pressure readings. Check and report any unusual variation throughout facilities.
  • Respond to emergency calls according to the facilities procedure manual.
  • Shovel work including digging, trenching, snow removal on walkways and stairs; applying ice melt when necessary.
  • Assist in set-up/tear down of special events. Assemble and move office furniture. Fill in for Custodial as needed.
  • Assist, as needed, with HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical repairs or modifications.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Ability to properly operate powered and non-powered tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in English, read/understand labels and directions on chemicals and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and safe work practices.
  • Proven successful experience working within a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel, including technical and academic staff.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of proper tree and shrub maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within 3 months of hire date.
  • Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator Certification within 6 months of hire date.
  • Experience in an academic environment or non-profit setting.
Conditions Of Employment
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
  • Perform physical tasks, such as lifting objects in excess of 50 lbs., climbing ladders and working at heights up to 30 ft; frequent stooping, bending, kneeling.
  • Work schedule is 1st shift, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Required to be on-call (on a rotating basis) to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Compensation Grade/Benefits
This is a DRI Technologist position Grade 29 with a starting minimum starting salary of $39,599. Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to their experience, skills, and abilities.
DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance (Flexible spending and health savings account options available); PERS 15.5% retirement match, 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of sick leave accrued per month, 11 paid holidays, and educational benefits. Additionally, there is no state income tax or social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
