This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Biological Science Research Technician 2 in the Department of Microbiology at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

The purpose of this position is to provide weekend support as a fish technician and to be an emergency responder (on-call) for an Oregon State University freshwater fish research facility, the Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL). The AAHL is located approximately 2 miles east of the OSU campus, Corvallis, Oregon.
The schedule for this position would be Friday through Sunday (or Saturday through Monday) with a somewhat flexible schedule of approximately 1 to 4 hours/day (approx. 10 hours/week) and to be on-call to respond to welfare related emergencies between the hours of Friday 5:00 pm through Monday 8:00 am.
The daily tasks when on site Saturdays and Sundays will include routine daily fish feeding, health monitoring and caring for animals as well as fish tank and equipment cleaning, equipment and building monitoring and maintenance. On the weekends the incumbent in this position will work independently and may be on site alone.
If called out to an emergency, the immediate goal is to ensure that the fish have life sustaining support such as flowing water, aeration and temperature control specific to their current needs. The expectation will be to trouble-shoot the problem, which may include equipment failure, balancing system parameters, power interruption or plumbing issues.
Fridays and/or Mondays will be used as an opportunity to cross over with the facility manager, train, debrief and receive direction for tasks. Other work in support of the running of the lab may include equipment fabrication, minor plumbing/carpentry. Some computer use and manipulation of digital controls will be required. This position supports the overall functions of the AAHL as determined by the AAHL manager.
The Aquatic Animal Health Lab (AAHL) is a freshwater fish and invertebrate research facility within the Department of Microbiology at Oregon State University (OSU). Research studies are conducted by a wide variety of research groups including OSU and other university professors, students, state departments and private entities. The lab focusses on fish health and disease research, but also includes a range of behavioral, ecological, genetic, temperature, environmental and aquaculture related studies. The 9000 sq ft lab has over 300 tanks of various sizes housing salmonids and other freshwater species including zebrafish, koi and tilapia. The lab is supplied with continuous flow-through, UV sterilized well water, aeration, temperature control and effluent treatment. For animal welfare, the mechanical life-support system is controlled digitally and alarmed at multiple points.

Position Duties
50% On-call emergency cover for animal welfare
  • On weekends between Friday 5:00 pm and Monday 8:00 am and during the manager’s annual leave or other absences: provide first responder overnight and daytime on-call emergency cover for animal (fish) welfare and mechanical life-support system alarms; be on site as soon as possible in the event of a call-out; receive/make phone calls and texts; make critical independent decisions; provide every effort to ensure that established life-saving conditions for fish welfare are in place/restored; follow OSU animal care guidelines; troubleshoot in the event of equipment failure/breakdown in effort to restore equipment to normal functionality; monitor and manipulate digital control system on a computer interface; communicate/seek assistance with relevant personnel, record/log call-out events, debrief and undergo ongoing training with manager.

30% Routine animal care
  • On Saturdays and Sundays: typical tasks include; Feed and care for freshwater fish/invertebrates to ensure fish health and biosecurity, cleaning tanks containing fish, health checking fish, observing signs of abnormal fish behavior, illness or injury, performing humane euthanasia of fish if required, performing basic water chemistry tests, maintaining accurate records in notebooks, communicate with researchers, staff, and manager.

20% General maintenance, repairs and construction
  • Typical tasks may include: Operate mechanical washing equipment (e.g. autoclave, pressure washer, trash pump/pool cleaner); prepare vats of sodium hypochlorite (strong bleach) for effluent treatment; maintain, repair, paint, construct, clean, disinfect equipment, building and/or animal areas; may involve basic plumbing/ carpentry/rudimentary electrical work.
Minimum Qualifications

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience caring for animals (e.g. feeding, housing, water quality, checking animals’ health, etc.).
  • Operational knowledge of aquariums/aquatic facilities/hatcheries or similar.
  • Experience with hand and basic power tools.
  • Some computer literacy and access to internet.
  • Ability to receive/make phone calls, texts and video calls.


This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • At least 6 months caring for animals (e.g. feeding, housing, water quality, checking animals’ health, etc.).
  • Experience with and/or basic understanding of: plumbing, pumps, mechanical systems.
  • Experience responding to emergencies or being on standby/available for call-outs.
  • Ability to stay calm in the event of an emergency, make appropriate decisions under pressure and communicate quickly with supervisors/staff.
  • Experience following established procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to work with others of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate well.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position is deemed essential and the employee may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
The schedule for this position would be Friday through Sunday (or Saturday through Monday) with a somewhat flexible schedule of approximately 1 to 4 hours/workday on site before 2pm (approx. 10 hours/week) and to be on standby/on-call to respond to welfare related emergencies as soon as possible between the hours of Friday 5:00 pm through Monday 8:00 am.
Although it is not possible to predict the frequency or timing of an emergency call-out, as a rough guide there are approximately 5 to 10 call outs per year. The manager covers emergency on-call responsibilities from Monday 8:00 am through Friday 5:00 pm and together with one other team member, can support standby/on-call duties when needed to cover days off for this position.
Must have internet accessibility and be able to receive/make phone calls, texts and video calls at all times during on-call period. A communications allowance to support basic cellular service will be provided as per OSU policy. A shared OSU laptop to access digital controls will be provided while on-call.
Some holiday work is required plus emergency response for animal welfare during for the manager’s annual leave or other absences. This is an SEIU represented position. Call-outs, vacation, standby, and on-call hours are compensated according to SEIU collective bargaining agreement.
Must be able to work under the following conditions with or without reasonable accommodation: outdoors, inclement weather, warm/cold temperatures; working under animal disease control procedures, working with chemicals such as chlorine solutions, disinfectants and conditions that sometimes require the use of protective equipment such as face mask, eye protection, ear protection, rain gear.
