Attorney - County of Bergen

Department of Human Services – Division of Alternatives to Domestic Violence

Under supervision by the Division Director or Victim Advocate Coordinator other duties maybe assigned, as required.

Knowledge and Job Responsibilities: (may include but not limited to)

· Knowledge about domestic violence and impact of violence and trauma on survivors and their children

· Interest in child custody and family law, public benefits, and a wide range of community resources to meet various survivor needs.

· Assist with the Legal Representation Project; by providing mentorship and supervision to project attorneys and advocates participating in the program.

· Assess program priorities based on survivor’s needs.

· Develop projects to address survivor’s needs and support efforts to secure grants to fund the project.

· Provide confidential virtual and in-person consultations, advice, and counsel, limited scope representation and direct representation to Alternatives to Domestic Violence survivors of intimate partner abuse as needed.

· Counsel may pertain to Orders of Protection, housing, and family law issues.

· Attend clinical and legals advocate meetings.

· Supervision of Division Director.

· Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective methods.

· Ability to establish and maintain records and files.

· Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Schedule:

· Monday – Friday / 40hrs/wk.

Education & Experience:

· Licensed attorney in the State of New Jersey.

· Registered member of the New Jersey Bar (in good standing with no disciplinary history).

Skills and Special Requirements:

· Excellent writing, verbal, and written skills.

· Bi/multilingualism and Spanish fluency (strongly preferred).
