Position: Associate, Real Estate

Location: Irvine, CA

Excellent Capital is a single family office based in Irvine, CA. The family office’s patriarch is actively looking for an Associate focused on real estate investment. The family office is focused on three investment strategies: real estate, public equities and private equities. Given the family has experience in residential and commercial real estate investment, the Associate will be responsible for helping to analyze and execute on investment opportunities in acquisitions of real estate.

The Associate will start off in doing market research on the current US and Canada real estate investment landscape while identifying the pockets of opportunities for capital deployment. Excellent Capital’s approach is to pursue undervalued pockets of real estate across the risk spectrum from development projects to stabilized assets in any format of investment vehicle from equity financing to bridge lending. The family office’s ability to deploy flexible, long term capital at speed while maintaining price discipline is a competitive advantage in any stage of the real estate cycle. While we will consider any geography across US and Canada in all asset classes (industrial, residential, retail, office), there will be a focus initially on bridge lending to ground-up developers as well as single family residential homes.

The position will provide an opportunity in both new transaction execution as well as oversight of real estate portfolios across multiple real estate sectors and markets.

Family office currently has administrative staff and public and private equities focused teams while the patriarch will be directly responsible for real estate allocations. The position will work directly with the patriarch to source, organize and transact on real estate investments.

Responsibilities

  • Source and execute on real estate transactions across real estate asset classes, geographies and investment structures.
  • Produce detailed investment committee recommendations based on due diligence, financial underwriting and market research while presenting to the rest of the investment team internally.
  • Lead in the definition and implementation of asset management strategies in both direct investments as well as partnership with best-in-class real estate asset managers.
  • Establish and maintain a financial and operating system that is focused on benchmarking performance of the real estate portfolio.
  • Oversee preparation of financial statements, tax returns and portfolio reports for family’s real estate portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate would be adaptable, honest, proactive, experienced and self-motivated. A keen desire to constantly improve knowledge in real estate investing and develop asset management judgment will be looked upon very favorably.
  • Real estate investment transaction experience including understanding of valuation and investment appraisal techniques will be looked upon very favorably.
  • An ability to build relationships with external partners and stakeholders and represent Excellent Capital in a trustworthy manner is a must.
  • 2+ years experience in real estate investing or real estate related businesses either representing an asset manager, bank or service provider is preferred but not required.
  • An ability to craft investment strategy messaging and provide investor feedback/competitive intelligence is key. While the candidate does not need to currently have a top notch investment analysis/due diligence skillset, an ability to think critically and anticipate various situations (“look around corners”) is an absolute must.
  • Strong work ethic and flexibility is critical – this is not a 9-5 job.
  • Clear ability to interact and navigate complex internal and external environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to be extremely organized and prioritize workflow while managing multiple projects. History and personal strategy of balancing competing priorities with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the business while meeting deadlines is a must.
