General Information
The Associate Director for Analytics & Decision Support is a new position within the office of Institutional Research. The position oversees efforts to identify and develop analytical tools that inform high-level decision-making within a large, research university. The Associate Director will lead a team responsible for gathering and/or investigating university data to glean insights about students, faculty, and staff, demonstrating how to effectively share these insights with campus leaders using a variety of communication methods. A successful candidate will have demonstrated experience guiding stakeholders in crafting appropriate research questions and using appropriate analyses and strategies to communicate trends, recommendations, and information to stakeholders, preferably within an institution of higher education.

Duties and Responsibilities
Decision Support & Analytics
  • Leads an Analytics & Decision Support team to identify and develop decision support tools that enhance the analytic capabilities of James Madison University.
  • Completes and presents studies, reports, and analyses that provide useful information about issues of importance to the university’s senior management and the JMU community.
  • Supports Assistant Director for Survey Research in managing university-wide survey data collection schedule, process, analysis, and communication.
  • Promotes and enhances data literacy efforts on campus in order to empower members of the JMU community to use data appropriately and effectively to inform decisions.
  • Champions data privacy, security, and ethics internally and in collaboration with other areas of campus.
Leadership/Supervision
  • Offers support, information and guidance in assisting the director for the purpose of developing effective vision, strategy, tactics and procedures for the department.
  • Serves as Director in the absence of the IR Director.
  • Provides leadership – supervision, performance evaluation, guidance and encouragement to those employees under supervision (Assistant Director and Data Scientist).
  • Serves as liaison with Information Technology Services (along with Associate Director for Reporting) regarding the implementation and/or use of SQL Server and Tableau Server.
Awareness of Professional Landscape
  • Stays current with important national and regional trends that affect higher education and assists OIR and the institution with appropriate responses.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive working knowledge of accrediting agencies and the impact of their unique and changing requirements on the institution.
  • Develops an awareness of the student as a learner and participant in the JMU community. This awareness enhances the usefulness of reports and analyses.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Master’s degree in data science, public policy, statistics, quantitative psychology or relevant field.
  • Relevant work experience in the field of data science, business intelligence, analytics, or research.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using SQL to manage relational databases.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using R to manage and analyze complex data.
  • Demonstrated expertise in visualizing data to effectively communicate key insights.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis and research methodology.


Preferred:
  • Terminal degree in data science, public policy, statistics, quantitative psychology or relevant field.
  • Progressively more advanced work experience in the field of data science, business intelligence, analytics, or research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in survey research methods.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing data visualizations using Tableau.
  • Experience working in Higher Education, particularly in areas related to decision-making or offering decision-support.
  • Professional supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in leadership development.
  • Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, complex, technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for visualizing data using best practices.
  • Ability to embrace and demonstrate the OIR values of continuous improvement, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Awareness of and commitment to the values of data privacy, security, and ethics.
  • Awareness of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the use of data for decision-making.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
