Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Dean III for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Honors Program. This position will provide one-on-one academic, career, and personal advising to students in the SAS Honors Program, with a focus on completion of the Honors Program requirements.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides first-level support and specialized academic advising to the assigned caseload.
  • Manages the day-to-day Honors Program operations on the Livingston Campus, and collaborates with the other campus-based Honors Program deans to meet program goals.
  • Implements, administers, supervises, maintains, and enhances programs and activities offered through the Honors Program.
  • Works closely with the Administrative Director and the Dean on all matters connected with admissions: outreach, recruitment, selection, and Scholars Days.
  • Has primary responsibility for all aspects of overall honors housing on the College Avenue, Livingston, Busch, and Douglass Campuses.
  • Leads the coordination of Scholars Days, the SAS Honors major undergraduate recruitment events.
  • Facilitates one section of the Honors Colloquium in the fall and spring semester.
  • Represents the program and campus on committees, and acts as liaison with faculty, staff, and university offices.
  • Collaborates as needed with projects coordinated by other Honors Program staff, such as Honors Ambassadors, Peer Mentors, Faculty Mentors, Tutoring Program, Artists Collective, Honors Alumni, First-Year Advising, etc.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

Minimum Education and Experience

Certifications/Licenses
  • Master’s degree in an academic discipline or counseling, higher education, social work, or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student development and academic theories, methodologies, and current practices in higher education.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in an academic, residential, judicial, student life/activities, or career development function.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Must be extremely detail oriented, data driven, and have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must understand the needs, preferences, and challenges of undergraduates.
  • Must have a dynamic and engaging personality, be flexible in terms of accessibility, and have experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five plus years of experience working with students. Attention to detail, record keeping, and data entry.
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, Instagram) valued.
  • Experience with service programming and/or volunteer management.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The SAS Honors Program Assistant Dean on the Livingston Campus assumes primary responsibility for independently managing their caseload and all assigned tasks, and oversees all matters related to their portfolio items. In addition, they work closely with the Dean and the Administrative Director for admissions and recruitment.

The Assistant Dean works independently, while seeking the advice and guidance of the Administrative Director and/or Dean of the Honors Program in situations that are unusual or exceptional. The position carries autonomy and authority in decisionmaking. Must be flexible and able to adapt to change. Must remain calm and in control, given the high volume of students and personal nature of their concerns.

Assistant Deans are sometimes called upon to provide crisis management, so they must be able to communicate Honors Program policies completely and clearly. Assistant deans make recommendations on special cases.

The Assistant Dean must be able to juggle the demands of the university system, including changing priorities as determined by university leadership. Must be a problem solver and have the ability to think on their feet. Must be a team player, able to effectively communicate with colleagues, staff, students, parents, faculty, and administrators throughout the university. The Assistant Dean must maintain effective professional relationships and maintain consistent standards in decision-making about academic policy.
