Assistant Professor – Music and Global Black Studies (specializing in Black Musics)
Location : Clemson, SC

Clemson University invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start August 15, 2023. This is a 9-month faculty position serving both the Department of Performing Arts and Global Black Studies, an undergraduate major/minor that arose from student demand for a course of study that attends to the lifeways of people of African descent.

Responsibilities include regularly teaching a Hip-Hop and African American Contemporary Culture course, developing and teaching an urban music production course in our audio technology lab or other music courses/ensembles in area of expertise.
The successful candidate will participate fully in departmental activities including recruiting, advising, and working collaboratively with faculty members in both Performing Arts and Global Black Studies.

The Clemson University Department of Performing Arts offers a nationally distinctive Performing Arts BA program. The curriculum offers separate concentrations in music, theatre, and audio technology combining studies in performance, technology, production, theory, and history into a unified program of study. In addition to discipline-specific concentrations, all performing arts students at Clemson take core classes within the major that give each student the tools to be successful collaborators in a wide variety of performing arts professions.

The Global Black Studies Program is an emerging undergraduate degree program at Clemson with a course of study focused on the global Black experience. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, Global Black Studies grounds students in the histories, cultures, literatures, and wide-ranging traditions of African descended populations.


Required Qualifications: Degree in African/Diasporic History, African-American Studies, Music Production, or a related field. Equivalent industry experience will be considered.

Desired Qualifications: Terminal degree is preferred. Teaching experience at the college level; evidence of potential to excel in high quality scholarly/creative activity; and demonstrated commitment to student recruitment.
