The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and the Program in Public Health (PPH) at Stony Brook University invite applications for a faculty position in Climate Change and Human Health. Candidates in any area related to the intersection of climate change and human health are encouraged to apply.

The incumbent can anticipate teaching opportunities in the area of climate change and human health, specific to their expertise. Thus, candidates should be committed to teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and preferably be able to demonstrate the ability to teach effectively at the graduate level. The successful candidate will develop an externally funded research program. The candidate is expected to provide exemplary departmental and university service. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in transdisciplinary academic environments, as both SoMAS and PPH have missions reflective of such a collaborative ethos.

This is one of two positions we are recruiting for in the area of climate change and health. This position will be housed in the Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SOMAS). There is a companion faculty posting with the candidate being hired in a Department of the candidate’s choosing in the Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. or foreign equivalent doctoral degree in hand before September 1, 2023, in the fields of population health sciences, environmental epidemiology, climate science, environmental science, or other relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications: Active research program in climate change and public health. Demonstrated excellence in a related area(s) of scholarship, and the ability to secure external funding. Demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring graduate students. Strong publication record in any area of climate change as it may relate to environmental and human health. Example fields of interest include but are not limited to: extreme weather and air and water pollution events and their impacts on human health, climate migration, disease vectors and climate, mental and behavioral health consequences of climate change, vulnerable communities and environmental justice, cardiopulmonary stress, ecology of infectious disease, loss of food security through impacted agriculture, and a range of health effects for environmental refugees. Successful candidates will have a research program that recognizes vulnerability at the intersection of climate change and health outcomes (e.g. across geographies, social groups, environmental media, or other relevant area), and will have a commitment to contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
