The Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Arlington seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure track appointment in Design and Area Coordinator of Design, at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2023.

Position Description
Teaching specializations: Our Design area offers degrees at the BA/BFA/MFA levels and is the largest program in our department, serving a wide range of student needs across the discipline. Applicants need to be qualified to teach within a variety of aspects of Design, especially within established and emerging tech courses. The successful candidate will work with MFA Design students either in coursework, in committees, or as their Committee Chair. Additionally, excellent communication with other faculty members and students is paramount to success in this faculty role.
The successful applicant will serve as Design Area Coordinator. The faculty member will participate in student advising and mentoring activities, faculty mentoring and supervision in the Design area, facilities maintenance, and budgeting of the Design area. All tenure stream faculty are expected to serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees. Facilities maintenance may include safety instruction, which is critical to insure a safe environment, materials inventories, shop and tool use and safety, faculty and work-study training, studio cleanliness and equipment maintenance.
Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equity in education through their scholarship, teaching, and/or service as well as a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Department Information
The Department of Art and Art History at University of Texas at Arlington is located in the City of Arlington in the center of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which has an ethnically diverse population and excellent cultural facilities. The Metroplex is home to several major internationally recognized museums and galleries (e.g., Kimbell Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum-Fort Worth, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art). In addition, Dallas-Fort Worth is home to over 20 corporate headquarters, including Toyota, Chase, Kimberly-Clark, AT&T, Exxon Mobil, McKesson, American Airline Group, with Uber moving to Dallas in 2022.
The UTA Design Area is one of the Department’s most successful and thriving programs, with approximately 300 undergraduate students, 5 graduate students, and over 200+ recent student design awards/honors/accolades. In addition to the UTA Fab Lab and computer facilities, our department itself includes a print lab, 4 computer labs, industry-level cardboard cutting table and printer for packaging design and production, and various fabrication equipment and lab.
The Art & Art History Department has over 800 undergraduate students within our 11 programs, and more than two dozen MFA students across four graduate pathways. There are 69 Department faculty presently (24 Tenured / Tenure-Track faculty and 45 Non-Tenure Track faculty), with 13 staff, and 19 GTAs in the Department. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Candidate must be well trained within the field of design (graphic design, web design, UX/UI, emerging tech, or more broadly across visual communication design). The candidate would need to be a versatile designer, with an emphasis on new technological skills within the field. Creative practice and industry experience backgrounds are strongly encouraged. Th candidate needs to demonstrate strong research interests and potential. Applicants with work that incorporates a global perspective and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications
  • A terminal degree (MFA/MDes/PhD) in Communication Design, Visual Communications, Graphic Design, or related fields from an accredited (recognized equivalent) university
  • Exceptional knowledge in one or more areas of Digital Media Design (e.g., Web/Mobile/UI/UX)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of conceptual and design-based principles applied to communication design
  • Ability to teach at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum
  • Expertise in Mac OS and Adobe Suite
  • Demonstration of ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, advising, and service
  • The selected candidate must continue to develop their work and reputation as a practicing designer
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Actively research at a national and international level

Preferred Qualifications
  • Effective two (2) years of teaching experience in graphic design courses at the university level
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional design or related work experience
  • Ability to develop a curriculum and propose special topics courses that would enhance the academic goals of the Design program
  • Expert user and instructor of applicable software and digital technologies engaged with current trends, and grounded in concepts, principles, and practices of UI design
  • Knowledgeable in and able to supervise a wide-ranging Design program area
  • Excellent record of active participation in professional organizations
  • Additional exceptional knowledge in specialized areas such as: Web Design (HTML/CSS/Javascript), Mobile App Design, UI, UX, Interactive Design, Motion Graphics, Emerging Technology, Fabrication, Information Graphics, Data Visualization, etc.
  • A working knowledge of industry tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, InVision, Sketch
  • A working knowledge of the ideation and creation of UI design deliverables: Sitemaps, user flows, wireframes, lo-fi and hi-fi layouts, prototypes
  • An effective mentor and advisor of students
  • Graduate-level research/thesis supervision and advising experience
  • Record of grant awarded activity
  • Manage and mentor area faculty (Tenured, Tenure-track, Senior Lecturers, Adjuncts, and GTAs)
  • Manage area budget and curriculum for each academic term
  • Manage / Conduct Concentration Portfolio Reviews
  • Coordinate area needs with the Department Chair
  • Handle area student grievance issues / procedures
  • Construct / nurture regionally competitive curriculum and program
  • Establish area committees when required with the Chair’s approval
