The Office of Marketing & Communications in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Assistant Director of Marketing position. This position manages the strategic marketing efforts for The Grainger College of Engineering’s owned and paid media. This position will develop, manage and execute marketing strategies that increase brand awareness, establish and enhance brand positioning, deepen connections and favorability with key audiences and move them to action.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Marketing Strategy

  • Guide and manage the development of The Grainger College of Engineering’s marketing communications plans for student recruitment, reputation marketing and student programming, and execute projects that drive that strategy
  • Act as the main point of contact between Grainger Engineering’s Office of Marketing & Communications (OMC) and the college’s Graduate, Professional and Online Programs Office (GPO) and manage all graduate program marketing strategy, planning and implementation
  • Manage marketing communications staff and work with external consultants to generate strong brand, recruitment and reputation marketing campaigns and programs across paid and owned media
  • Assist with developing, monitoring, analyzing, and refining digital advertising efforts
  • Assist with collecting and analyzing data, implement decisions based on that data, and experiment aggressively to learn what is working in the market
  • Work in concert with web team members to implement web-based marketing strategies and ensure college websites reflect the brand, marketing goals and overall college digital strategy
  • Collaborate on strategy development with departments and units coordinating marketing efforts across the entire college
  • Explore, develop and implement innovative marketing approaches that will be effective and have significant positive impact on the stature of the college

Marketing Management

  • Work collaboratively with the marketing communications team responsible for conceptualizing, planning, developing, and producing marketing materials in all mediums for a broad range of objectives and audiences
  • Collaborate with college communicators in departments, units and institutes to ensure marketing activities articulate, refine, and amplify the college and university brand, and are aligned with centrally coordinated plans
  • Participate in concepting and copywriting on various projects
  • Work closely with the creative team to ensure that video and design projects meet the marketing needs and quality standards of the college
  • Work with team members from across the Office of Marketing & Communications to develop materials, events and communications that will ensure over time all college personnel understand how to build the brand in everything they do
  • Oversee the college’s Google brand and analytics ecosystem including, but not limited to Analytics, Search Console, My Business, Tag Manager
  • Track campaigns and monitor, evaluate, and report on multi-channel performance
  • Move quickly and flexibly, work on projects simultaneously, and resolve complex situations
  • Supervise marketing communications staff and student workers, delegate work, review completed tasks, and provide guidance
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of marketing experience
  • Demonstrated experience with digital media management in a marketing communications environment
  • Experience in using and knowledge of current social media platforms for strategic communications or brand and reputation development


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with utilizing web tracking technology (UTM codes, GA tags, etc.)
  • Experience in the Google brand and analytics ecosystem.
  • Strong experience in social media and web-based analytic tools to provide data-based decision support around content generation and distribution strategies
  • Communication and marketing experience in a university setting

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team-based, dynamic environment that involves diverse group of developers, writers, designers, and videographers.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, media and others

Appointment Information



This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The minimum salary is $65,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
