Self-Help is seeking a dynamic leader to join our team as an Area Branch Manager. The Area Branch Manager will manage the San Jose branch and oversee other branches in the Central Bay Area while raising visibility and increasing impact in the community. The Area Branch Manager will build and leverage networks, partnerships, teams, and relationships to drive goal attainment, strong economic performance, employee and member satisfaction and retention, and strong community relations.

The Area Branch Manager will be responsible for ensuring, through management of branch staff, that all operational practices of the branch, including lending and deposit activities, comply with Self-Help processes and procedures, federal laws and regulations set forth by the NCUA and other regulatory agencies.

WHAT you’ll do:

  • In conjunction with senior management, participate in strategic planning process by recommending goals; develop, communicate and implement branch level production goals, budgets and operating plans to align with achieve those goals.
  • Represent and promote Self-Help in community and business development activities to enhance Self-Help’s brand and demand for products and services with particular focus on deposit, mortgage, and consumer loan growth.
  • Effectively represent Self-Help with realtors, non-profits, banks, government agencies and other community partners.
  • Analyze trends in both local/niche market and member profiles to identify potential opportunities.
  • Lead community relations or business development initiatives designed to cultivate new business relationships and increase profitability.
  • Coordinate business development planning sessions with Branch Managers; provide guidance and direction.
  • Ensure adherence to operational policies, procedures and controls to ensure the safety and security of employees, members and credit union assets.
  • Monitor performance and activity of branches, including number of transactions, volume, teller errors, loan volume, teller and loan personal sales, and new accounts.
  • Take action to address or develop and implement plans or interventions when components of branch performance are lower than acceptable or expected. Recommend action plans to improve operational policies, procedures and controls, and mitigate controllable losses in operations.
  • Perform auditing, reconciling, and reporting to ensure adherence to quality controls, compliance and managing branch self-assessment process.
  • Oversee the physical facilities and equipment of the branches, and establish appropriate safety practices for employees, and ensure security procedures are being followed.
  • Manage the lending function of assigned branches, ensuring the loan interviews; loan process, approvals and/or loan closings adhere to sound credit practices and administration policies.
  • Implement and coordinate programs and activities to meet/exceed performance goals.
  • Provide consistent leadership, coaching and direction to branch managers and area staff, ensuring timely and effective communication to drive individual and branch success. This includes coaching on specific strategies and activities that drive operational and financial performance (e.g., MSR referrals, profiling, and outbound calling).
  • In the absence of a branch manager, review and evaluate daily, weekly, monthly calendar to ensure that the branch is properly staffed and that everyone’s time is maximized to serve members.
  • Supervise staffing of branches to deliver effective and efficient member service; identify development needs and provide timely feedback; and provide one-on-one coaching as needed.
  • Conduct timely hiring, employee development, performance management, and compensation reviews for branch tellers and member service representatives.
  • Ensure that staff receives on-going training, including compliance and security procedures.
  • Ensure that all staff are proactive in identifying products that may be beneficial to our members.
  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services
  • May participate in, and or lead, Credit Union assigned projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

WHAT you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience 6 years of banking or retail experience including at least 5 years of supervision in banking or a financial institution.
  • Prior sales or sales management experience in a financial institution, retail or service industry preferred.
  • Experience working in or significant knowledge of assigned area and surrounding community preferred.

  • Proven branch management, coaching and leadership skills.
  • Exemplary communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across the organization and influence others without direct control.
  • Ability to establish strong peer relationships and communicate effectively with multiple company disciplines, cross-functional, and external teams.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability and willingness to travel in the region to build deposits and loan relationships.
  • Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.
