The university’s carillon, housed in the William Tower in the Ritchie Center, was cast by Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry at Asten, Netherlands (1999), consists of 65 bells, G2- A, then chromatic up to C8, in concert pitch with the bourdon weighing approximately 6 tons. There is a matching practice instrument in the Newman Center.

Position Summary

The University Carillonneur is an adjunct faculty position that oversees all aspects of teaching, programming, administration, and maintaining the carillon.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach weekly, 30-minute private lessons; hours will vary depending on number of enrolled students
  • Perform brief daily recitals (Monday through Friday) during academic terms (Fall, Winter, Spring), a Holiday recital on the second Sunday in December, at Commencement, and for DU faculty/staff events in the Magness Arena
  • Provide tours to students, alumni, recruits and local interested people of the carillon tower
  • Organize an annual summer carillon recital series and a series of players for performing before home games in Magness Arena
  • Arrange for annual maintenance of the instruments

Required Qualifications

  • Either a diploma from one of the accredited carillon schools or a bachelor’s degree
  • Must be a Carillonneur member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America or comparable affiliated guild
  • Ability to teach students from beginning through advanced levels
  • Public performance experience as a Carillonneur

Preferred Qualifications

  • Established record of success as a Carillonneur

Course Rate

Annual salary for non-teaching duties: $16,500; $100 per hour for teaching.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
