Position Overview:

The Accelerator Technologist II - Metal Finishing works under general or intermittent supervision and performs assignments of basic to intermediate complexity in metal finishing and field installations and work across other areas such as mechanical assembly, and/or machine maintenance as needed.

The Technologist II will conduct a block of work as a complete project, or as a portion of a larger and more diverse project, with strict adherence to site-specific safety requirements as well as work planning and control (WPC) protocols for shop, field or experimental areas. Assignments may include the designing of fixtures and tooling, chemical cleaning various metals for high vacuum systems, vapor degreasing of various materials, electroplating, polishing, and steam cleaning.

The Technologist will work in radiation controlled areas. Will communicate and coordinate with line supervision as to effort status, progress, and completion timelines. Must be able to follow all SLAC safety rules and regulations and identify areas for improvement.

Your Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Chemically clean a variety of metals used in high vacuum systems
  • Vapor degrease various material and metals
  • Steam clean various material and metals, including large assemblies for vacuum use
  • Electroplate base metals with copper, gold, silver, nickel and other metals
  • Processes aluminum by chemical cleaning to specifications
  • Steam clean and perform additional duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to perform assignments of basic to intermediate complexity in metal finishing
  • Able to select and use appropriate hand tools
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow mechanical drawings in order to understand metal finishing requirements
  • Have experience in the operation of cranes, hoists and forklifts to move large mechanical equipment safely
  • Ability to precisely follow detailed procedures or work instructions
  • Experience in the performance of basic plumbing
  • Experienced at working independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess ability to coordinate, plan, and organize tasks.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal/written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to routinely meet production quality and schedule requirements while effectively balancing quality and quantity of work
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to comply with good shop practices and safety requirements
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment while facilitating the safe and efficient flow of work
  • Ability to demonstrate the understanding of when, how and where to seek assistance from technical and/or safety experts as well as report up through line management when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the basic concepts related to metal finishing and specific environmental, health and safety hazards
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record for driving vehicles around SLAC site.

Desired Skills:

  • Working knowledge of mathematics
  • Experience with developing written procedures
  • Vocational school, apprenticeship or equivalent metal finishing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow cleanroom practices and protocols
  • Demonstrated ability in basic understanding of UHV handling techniques
  • Proficiency with standard office applications including Microsoft office suites

The expected pay range for this position is $44.23 (Step 1) - $53.46 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
