Job Description
Advising and Academic Support (75%)
  • Assist students to discover their academic and career interests through course selection and exploration with the Liberal Arts and Science Curriculum.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to Undeclared students and PSEO students
  • Maintain and enhance the explanatory, intrusive, and developmental advising focus for undeclared students to move students to a major field of study.
  • Work closely with students to identify appropriate academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, extracurricular activities, study abroad programs, research, and internships
  • Monitor and evaluate academic progress, assist in developing a personalized success plan and provide follow-up support for students on academic warning, probation, and conditionally admitted students.
  • Teach academic success or similar courses on an as needed basis.
  • Coordinate PSEO program for high school students taking classes
  • Develop, assess, and revise advising strategies and resources for the undeclared students and PSEO students
  • Assist students in developing academic success strategies when struggling with time management/organization, study skills, test-taking, etc.
  • Manage referrals and Academic Updates through the Advising & Early Alert system.
  • Participate in Student Orientation, Advising and Registration.
  • Participate in regular meetings with other student relations coordinators and Academic Success Center staff.
  • Work effectively in a team environment.


Resource Development and Program Coordination (25%)
  • Work closely with other university stakeholders, including other advisement units, academic departments and support programs associated with first-year, curricular and co-curricular, and other retention initiatives supporting Undeclared students.
  • Develop and maintain resources (advisement literature, websites, and training sessions) related to advising and academic coaching.
  • Work with Career Development Center to provide major exploration information sessions and programs.
  • Coordinate the GRIT Program for conditionally admitted students, including all program planning and communication
  • Collaborate with the Career Development Center, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, and First Year Programs to develop and deliver consistent developmental coaching for GRIT students
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the Graduate Assistant for the GRIT program
  • Provide accurate record keeping of the GRIT program
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the GRIT program each semester and submit written report of findings
  • Contribute to planning for retention initiatives.
  • Present workshops and seminars as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree plus one academic year of professional experience, OR two years of professional experience, OR an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or experience. Experience includes working in college-level academic advising, student retention, career development, orientation, related student services, or admissions. Experience can also take the form of practicum, internships, or similar experience.


  • Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents

  • Work effectively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education leadership, or other related field


  • Experience in college-level academic advising with emphasis in working with undeclared student populations

  • Knowledge of student development theory and ability to apply theory to developmental advising and academic coaching

NINE - MONTH FACULTY APPOINTMENTS

Along with all other Universities that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, standard faculty appointments are for 168 duty days distributed over any nine consecutive months. The nine months need not align with the traditional academic year and may be changed every two years. Initial faculty appointments at MSU Moorhead are expected to be similar to or the same as the academic year unless otherwise indicated on the vacancy notice.
