Job Description

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Advisor’s primary role will be onboarding and supporting students in G3 (Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back) credit and noncredit programs. The advisor serves as a resource to assist individuals in overcoming non-academic barriers that may affect their ability to complete their educational goals successfully. This includes communicating regularly with students, maintaining records of student outreach and other interactions, making connections to available college and community support services, and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required: ·
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Humanities or related field or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
  • Experience in advising students.
  • A commitment to diversity issues concerning student access, enrollment, and retention.


Knowledge:
  • Utilize theories and practices related to higher education academic advising.
  • Possess awareness of academic disciplines, curriculums, and programs.

Skills:
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Exhibit attention-to-detail and a high degree of organization.

Abilities:
  • Work effectively within an ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse student population.
  • Interpret and administers federal and state policies and procedures.
  • Employ the interpersonal skills needed to facilitate a student-centered, inclusive, and culturally sensitive advising rapport that effectively meets student needs, interests and goals.
  • Develop inclusive and ethical practices consistent with program and population needs that promote learning, student development, progress, and success.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of program issues and concerns.
  • Make recommendations as appropriate while exercising decision making, judgment and discretion.
  • Deliver student services and referrals to other partner services and/or agencies.
  • Display leadership qualities and characteristics necessary for developing effective working relationships with students/customers, partner agencies, partner staff and other community individuals and groups.
  • Ability to provide services to prospective students including non-credit training preparedness, academic advising, registration and enrollment, counseling and possibly student activities.
  • Works with students/customers who are frustrated, angry and/or confused; diffuses the situation and provides the student with a positive experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, Adult Education, or related field.
  • Work experience in a higher education setting or in counseling or academic coaching.
  • Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate and other educational technologies.
  • Familiar with creating and/or using forms, surveys, brochures, and record-keeping procedures.
