Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as a Lecturer 1 rankof Physics & Astronomy department beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.

This position will be assigned to teach undergraduate core curriculum courses at a UTRGV Collegiate High School in and/or another UTRGV campus. The UTRGV Collegiate High School provides academically talented students in grades 11th and 12th the opportunity to earn dual credit while beginning academic study that will lead towards the completion of a baccalaureate degree. All courses follow the same curriculum and assessment guidelines as other UTRGV courses taught in this discipline. All academic and institutional policies governing instruction, assessment, grading, confidentiality, mandated reporting, and departmental participation apply to courses taught as part of this program. The UTRGV College High Schools are located in Brownsville, Harlingen, & Edinburg ; therefore, the ideal candidate must be able to travel to these locations to deliver instruction.
Faculty hired to teach collegiate high school courses may be required to participate in supplemental training focused on working with high school-aged college students. Trainings may include but are not limited to: Effective teaching methods for working with high school-aged college students; maintaining student engagement with coursework; and, safety protocols and best practices for working with high school-aged college students.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy have tenure track and tenured faculty members and several lecturers, post-doctoral scholars, research and visiting faculty members actively engaged in research in the areas of Applied Optics, Biophysics, Computational Physics, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, Nanotechnology, Optical Astronomy, Physics Education, Radio Astronomy and Relativistic Astrophysics. Besides excellence in research and teaching, the department places special emphasis on the early involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in research. Several opportunities for generous financial support are provided to deserving students at all levels. Integration of research and education at all stages is one of the strengths of the department. The department lays emphasis on high quality teaching and student mentoring. The department has strong well-funded research programs. The department faculty members have research collaborations with scientists across the globe.

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. in Physics, Physical Science, Astronomy, or closely related field from an accredited university.

  • At least two years’ experience in teaching physics/physical science/astronomy.

  • Demonstrated or evidence of potential for using technology effectively to foster students’ learning and a strong commitment to inclusive teaching practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
  • Commitment to teaching excellence of physics and astronomy at high school and university levels.

  • M.S. in Physics, Physical Science, Astronomy, or closely related field from an accredited university.

  • At least two years’ experience in teaching physics/physical science/astronomy.

  • Demonstrated or evidence of potential for using technology effectively to foster students’ learning and a strong commitment to inclusive teaching practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience teaching at the University level is desirable, as well as ability to use technology to support teaching and learning.

  • Working and teaching experience in institutions with diverse student bodies such as HSI’s or equivalent operations.

  • Demonstrated ability or evidence of potential for implementing student-centered active teaching approaches in both face-to-face and remote/online teaching.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
